What are in Montgomery county is the closest thing to living in a small town?

I'm feeling overwhelmed by the crowds, hurried lifestyle and stress of living in Bethesda. Moving completely out of the area is not an option because of work and family. I love the idea of living in a "Town." Does this exist in Montgomery county? This isn't really another "I hate the DC area" post. Any ideas?

Garrett Park. I also think that people have said that Olney is like this as well.

Also Takoma Park. Everybody knows everybody, they have their own events like fireworks and the folk festival ...

We recently moved to the Four Corners area, close to Sligo Creek Parkway, and to me it feels almost like living in a camp. Just off busy roads are quiet streets with huge trees...It's not quite a small town feel, but it certainly doesn't feel bustling and harried either.

The ones mentioned already are the obvious suspects: Takoma Park, Kensington, Garrett Park are all the ones that spring to my mind, too. Is transit important to you? Some parts of Palisades, have that kind of feel, to me, too but aren't real transit-accessible. What would make you feel less stressed and crowded? Being able to walk to do more errands and not have to fight traffic and parking or living in a bit more distant spot, but putting into a quiet, rural area in the evening? For the latter, perhaps look out towards Anne Arundel Co?

Olney for sure! We will be moving there. Where do yo work?

My DH works from home 2 days a week and the other 3 days in downtown DC. He will use ICC to drive to Shady Grove and then metro in. It should not be too bad.

However, if commuting from Olney to anywhere like DC or Bethesda five days a week, you will never get to experience the small town charm!

OP here- thanks for your opinions so far! I guess I'm searching for a good mix of small town feel, friendly neighbors, and feeling like part of a community. Around here there don't seem to be many actual towns, vs in the Boston suburbs, for example, everyone speaks of the "town" they're from.

Good idea. And if you like the look and feel of that, King Farm might be a good option, too.
