We live in Cabin John and love the community feel here. It is definitely quirky though.

Around here there don't seem to be many actual towns, vs in the Boston suburbs, for example, everyone speaks of the "town" they're from.

I agree. But I think some neighborhoods are more tightly knit than others and you might be able to get some of that in a different neighborhood. I think it's Carderock Springs in Bethesda that has a neighborhood pool/swim club that's a nice center of the community. And on the other side of Bethesda, I know people that live in Hillmeade, off Bradley Blvd, which is a lot of smaller 1940s capes and such, so a bit physically closer together, talking about the neighborhood Halloween party and costume parade for kids and the neighborhood park.

I'd say Damascus and Poolesville.

I am from a town near Boston. There is nothing like that here.

Kensington! Small town parades, everyone knows each other (and the moms are actually nice and mostly non competitive).

I'm a city girl but once I found this place, I am here to stay! Very good commute to DC if needed. Few if any good places to eat in town but that is really the major problem with Kensington so we can't complain.

Stonegate?

LOL!

It's hardly a town. It's a development of homes with the closest shops located off Layhill and Bel Pre - maybe Cloverly . . .

Olney has a community feel with easy access to shops.

And small towns don't have trains? GP gives you small town feel plus commuter access to downtown - best of both worlds.
