I really just want some nice quality, simply baby bedding -- no characters or over the top stuff. We are having a little girl but dont want her drowning in ribbons and lace. I peaked thru BRU and BBB and did not like what I found. Any ideas? Online is an option too!

Great Beginnings, in Gaithersburg. |
PBK had the BEST sheets...so soft. |
I'm not into the themed bedding stuff either and had a hard time finding bedding I liked. I did finally decide though to get my bedding at Pottery Barn Kids. Restoration Hardware has nice simple stuff too. Land of Nod (Crate & Barrel's kid line) also might be an option, but I think most of their stuff is "themed."
The Maddie Boo and Serena & Lilly lines have simple bedding too, but it's pretty pricey. I know Dawn Price Baby (near Eastern Market) carries the Serena & Lilly line; not sure where you can get Maddie Boo other than online. |
Had anyone try at Macy's? |
I went with Land of Nod and very happy. We are having a girl too, and I wanted to avoid a lot of pink. Bedding is cute but not "cutesy," beautiful colors, and great quality. Plus there are fun accessories if you want those, too.
PB and Restoration Hardware baby stuff was just way more than we wanted to spend. Land of Nod isn't cheap, but it beats everything I've seen in the large baby stores -- all that themed stuff turns me off too. (Only note is that I haven't been to Great Beginnings yet, which apparently has terrific stuff, and this month it's 20% off.) Have fun choosing. Once I got the bedding, the whole idea of the nursery became super fun and real! |
I found a set I liked at www.beyond-bedding.com, then bid on it through their eBay listing (and got it for less than half price!). They'll take anything back within 14 days, no questions asked. And a lot of their stuff is also carried on Amazon, so you can check the reviews for the set you like there. Good luck! |
I have a question kind of related - did anyone just not buy bedding? I found some I love but then asked some parents and they told me you never ever use it, since you can't put covers over the baby. They said to just buy sheets for the mattress. thoughts? |
PP - if you do a search for "bumpers" you will see the issue debated at length. I would just go with your gut. For both of mine, I purchased the "set" but used the quilt as a throw on the rocker chair. I did use the bumpers (and still do) and my kids loved using them as body pillows. I even used the long one in my son's "big boy bed" as a sort of transition item since he loved rubbing the piping with his hand while falling asleep. I'll probably do the same with my second. But can you just buy some crib sheets and call it a day? Absolutely. As I said, go with your gut and you'll sleep better at night! |
Sheets by themselves are fine. But I still found that the rest of the sheet set (with or without bumpers) introduces a color scheme and pulls the room's "look" together. Of course, if you don't care about that kind of stuff, your parents are absolutely right.
For me, I spent too much time thinking (and worrying) about the "bumper question" (see other threads) before finally sending the bumper back. It was a huge part of the bedding "look" but I decided I could get over it. So now I have the quilt, which we'll hang on the wall as decoration, and a crib skirt, and a matching sheet for the crib. I know the cute matching sheet won't always be on the crib (although I may buy another one to use when I'm washing the first one), but I still like having the coordinated look. I personally am happier when things look more coordinated than haphazard, but again, if you are indifferent to that, some soft sheets will do the trick! |
I got ours at Target. Not very much selection in stores, but a lot of selection online. Our set is very high quality, very cute without being overly "babyish", and very affordable. |
I love Daisy Baby in Bethesda. They have a huge selection of bedding, both custom and ready made. A lot of the same bedding designers carry the same fabrics, and the DB salesperson was very helpful at looking up the various prices so we could order the patterns I selected from the designer with the lowest cost.
Also, I'd avoid ordering a blanket and sheets with your bedding. A lot of the sets come with both, but if you do custom, you can omit these and spend the money on coordinating window treatments instead. We never once used the blanket that we orderd with our baby bedding (you don't use a blanket in the beginning, and we received so many other blankets that were much cozier than the baby bedding coverlet that we use instead now). And if you read the fine print, many of the sheets have to be dry cleaned, which is totally impractical. I love the Buy Buy Baby jersey sheets, that come in a variety of colors. They're so soft and cheap. I have several in colors that coordinate with our bumper/bedskirt. |
Also, if you want to go the online route, poshtots.com has a great selection and is a great site for getting ideas. However, you'll probably be better off buying your bedding from a store. I fell in love with a particular set of bedding on poshtots and was able to have bedding made through Daisy Baby in the same fabrics at a much lower price. |
btw, infant don't use blankets or pillows so you really only need a fitted sheet and a bumper. i'm not into pastel stuff and had a hard time finding anything. i ended up buying two solid color fitted sheets (flannel) at babies r us for $6 each and had a hand me down bumper from pottery barn. still have the sheets almost three years later. |
I agree. We also got our bedding here and we're on our second child with it. I wanted to avoid boats/dinos/zoo animals and I got a great pattern from Land of Nod. Also, I liked that they sell their bedding as separates since I didn't want a bumper, stacker, etc. I just got some fitted sheets, a skirt and a quilt. At first I felt like I had wasted money on the quilt since I could not use it for the baby (and I never got around to hanging it on the wall), but then it was perfect when we moved our son to a toddler bed. Now he's in a twin bed and we're using the same set for our 6 month old. |
