Oak View and New Hampshire Estates- separating into two different schools?

Anonymous
Does anyone know if MOCO made a decision about making Oak View and New Hampshire separate k-5 schools? (currently NHE is k-2 and Oak View is 3-5)
Anonymous
Not yet. Decision will be made this Fall, by November.

Is the community generally for or against this possible split?

I think it depends on who you ask. Oak View families tend to favor it, New Hampshire Estates, not as much. NHE has higher FARMs and ESOL (probably due to having Pre K), but both are fairly high.

Is it also because Oak View has the HGC?

But aren't they the same families? Or do you mean that the families who live near Oak View favor it and those who live near NHE don't?

Exactly. I have a friend who teaches at NHE and we were discussing this topic just a few days ago. She said that the vibe around NHE was that Oak View (the school, or the families, not sure) was trying to shed NHE. But that is just one person's opinion based on other opinions, rumors and "vibes," so who knows. Like I said, I think it depends on who you ask. I'm not terribly familiar with what the demographics would be for each of the schools if they split, but I'm sure that is one of the biggest factors in people's opinions.

I live within walking distance oak view and I'd rather have one school to send my kid for k-5. And Oak view is a better performing school.

Why is that? It's the same kids, except for the HGC.

Is it a case in which some parents do private for primary grades, then go to Oak View? We are a former Montgomery Knolls/Pine Crest family, and found that a lot of the parents in the Pine Crest neighborhood sent their kids to a local Catholic school for K-2 because MK was somehow less desirable. On paper, MK had a higher Farms rate and more ESOL students, but they also had Pre K, which is only for Farms kids. And it makes sense that the younger kids would be still learning English, but out of ESOL by the time they got to 3rd grade.

Just curious if the perception is the same. I actually preferred split schools because the primary school was very primary-oriented and I felt like it was very nurturing for the age group, whereas PCES had a more mature feel.

If it's the same kids, then that implies that it's the school/teacher/administration itself that is better. Of course if you're only going by test scores, the HGC kids will radically skew the results in 4th and 5th.

But how do you measure which school is "better performing" when only Oak View has test scores? NHE is a primary school that isn't taking standardized tests.

Nhe has the terra nova test w/ about a 40 percent pass rate.

Of course a lot of the esol kids have acquired fluency by the time they are in 3rd/4th grade

Second graders don't take the Terra Nova test anymore.

Starr recommended against unpairing the schools. Status quo for both these schools and communities. Such a shame to deprive families of a neighborhood school all because of politics.
