Townhouse Living in Arlington?

Anonymous
The reality is sinking in that single family home living is probably beyond our budget, at least if we're going to live in something other than a tear down. Are there any townhouse communities with families/kids? We want the great schools in Arlington, but we don't want to totally sacrifice the community/neighbors-with-kids feel. Any suggestions???

If you do some searches on the Real Estate forum, you'll find that lots of families are very happy with townhouse living. Many do have a good sense of community.

Look at Fairlington. Some of the units are huge and it's been a family neighborhood since it was built for returning GI's and their baby-boom kids in the late 40s

Bad school unless you are ok with a Spanish immersion program and opt into that school.

Those cost more than the surrounding SFH. I doubt that's what OP is looking for.

If you're referring to Abingdon, it's not a "bad school," nor does it run a Spanish immersion program anymore. Your information is 10 years old, and sounds just a little bit racist.

Those surrounding single family homes are probably vintage 40 brick boxes that are teardowns. Read OP original intent. This is a TH in a more traditional neighborhood he described. Most TH in Arlington cost 600 plus because they are newer construction.

What's your price range, OP?

I know families who live in arlington townhouses. (we lived in a TH in fairfax for awhile after I had my daughter and it was great.) I'd look for something walking distance to a park with a playground and then you'll really not mourn the lack of a big backyard as much. (I'd also lean toward a townhouse with a small amount of fenced-in green space vs. just a patio or deck, for more of a family feel.) I'd probably also try to find a complex with a pool, which will raise your HOA fees, but most Arlington SFH communities do not have pools. (and the ones that do have waitlists.)

Fairlington is a terrific choice if you have young kids, but most of the families I know outgrew their THs there by the time their kids were in elementary.

I know several families with up to 6 kids living in a townhouse and many with 3 children. They do own larger townhouses however.

Arlington is going down hard I would look at other metro accessible sfh homes with good schools.
