Third grade "basic multiplication and division facts", how basic?

Anonymous
Our AAP web-site asks kids to learn the basic facts of multiplication and division. What is considered basic? Just the tables?
Anonymous
Basic facts up to te 12s.

0*0 to 12*12 and the same for division.

Okay, thanks. That is not hard

Basic facts up to 20, they will need it through 30 later.

Do you mean they will need to do 19x18, 169/13 etc? That will take some time to memorize.

12x12 ...division not nessisary

If your AAP website says it, why aren't you asking the school? You've already gotten three different answers here. It appears the expectation is different at each school.

I disagree. My kid was given timed multiplication and division tests in 3rd grade. 60 questions in 2 minutes.

Yes, at the end of the year. At the beginning, 12x12 is better than many AAP kids.

Yes. The first few weeks are spent on timed multiplication tests.

As a teacher I would say that a child who doesn't understand the connection between multilication and division tp the point where he/she wouldn't be able to memorize one set of facts without the other, should not be memorizibg facts to begin with. Using fingers, manipulatives, and mental strategies to figure out facts builds the number sense they are missing.

Do they even teach math facts in school anymore? I've had to teach all of them to both of my kids. They seem to give timed tests on facts that they never actually teach. It's bizarre.
