Metropolitan DC Local Politics

Whatever. Watch the CSPAN. Popcorn please.
If you only ever listened to the constituents |
| Those 120 business owners who signed the petition against the bike lanes are incredibly brave to speak their minds publicly. They are the job creators. I will continue to support them. |
By advocating for them to not have access to a sidewalk, so that people driving out of DC can more conveniently drive faster past their businesses without stopping? |
| Exactly. |
Many of the signatures were from busboys and hostesses, not the owners. When contact, many owners said they never would have signed such a petition. |
I see the names of many owners on that list. Super brave after the attack by those crazy ANC commissioners. |
| It’s so easy. Paint a bike path on the massive sidewalk. Keep the traffic and the parking. Everyone wins |
| There aren't too many "massive sidewalks" on Connexticut Avenue, and where they are, there are a lot of pedstrians and other street activity. |
|
Oh sure.
Just like the crime bill was “misunderstood” |
Job creators. Lol. Rent-seeking leeches reliant on Main Streets and Corridor grants who cannot think or plan long term. |
|
DC Council should resign and new elections be held. They’ve lost the peoples confidence. Let competent people do urban planning.
Did they even March on the Congress? What a terrible idea. Especially when 60 people show up most of whom are your staffers and family |
DC has a whole office of professional planners; it is called the DC Office of Planning, and the professionals who work there are trained, are experienced and are among the very best in the entire country. There are also planners at DDOT, and they too are among the best in the country. You know what? They plan things. And people like you oppose what they plan, making their lives more streesful, and making the plans they want to implement, take longer and end up being watered down so they don't have as much positive impact as they were designed to have. Professional planners helped rewrite the zoning codes and professional planners help redesign our streets, like Connecticut Avenue. The Council merely approves many of the plans. So yes, let's let the professional olaners do their jobs and let the Council approve their plans as intended. NotaBene: Professional planners are designing Conn. Ave. - will you let them do their job? |
Actually, the planners are much better at doing the political bidding of the mayor than at actual honest-broker planning. It's gotten ridiculous that OP's idea of public input is to plan a handful of what they call charettes (more like charades) run by consultants to gather input on line and on stickies to support exactly what OP and the mayor want. The Zoning Commission and the BZA need their own independent professional staffs and the Historic Preservation Office needs to be moved out of the Office of Planning also. |
| Even DDOT engages in magical thinking. Their "traffic diversion study" of Connecticut Avenue assumes that fifty percent of the vehicle traffic diverted because of capacity constraints imposed by Option C will "divert" into bike trips. This "conclusion" would be hilarious if the consequences weren't serious and significant. |
I’m not sure which studies are correct. But given the choice to believe the opinion of a long time business owner who lives in the neighborhood and has sent their kids to DCPS or believe the opinion of a newcomer 30-something ANC commissioner who is over educated and underemployed, I’m going to side with the business owner 100% of the time. |
