GDS pedophile

Traumatic and sad for the victims and their families. Sending prayers.

How much interaction did this guy have with GDS students and for how long?
Anonymous
Not a teacher or regular staff member. Believe he was the assistant coach for the girls basketball team for a couple of years. The head GDS coach is also the Dean of Students and very involved with the team and respected by the girls, doubt the assistant had much alone time with the team.

Nothing here, trolls. Move along.

GDS brought in a sketchy AAU coach as a girls varsity assistant to get Division I level basketball players (which is increasingly common but rather surprising at a school that purports not to overemphasize sports). Their bad luck he may be an actual criminal. Agree he probably would not have been alone with GDS kids 1 on 1 so an upsetting discovery but fortunately not one likely to ultimately involve anything at GDS. A sad reminder that parents need to be vigilant in the youth sports setting.

What makes the coach "sketchy"?

As a general rule, the sketchy type coaches operate as "fixers" of sorts. Promising pie-in-the-sky opportunities to young players and their families; leveraging their access to players with high schools or colleges to get financial or job opportunities for themselves (e.g., a job on a high school staff); charging families without a lot of money fees for private training sessions. Lack of educational or coaching credentials. Often have a "roll the ball out and let them run" attitude to the AAU games and do not teach good fundamentals.

LOL. Talk about stereotypes. How do you know this particular person fit that profile.

Stick to knitting.

He fit it to a T. Anyone who knows ISL basketball well (let alone girls AAU basketball in this area) knows it. Not sure why you are arguing so much over something that is actually pretty non-controversial. Obviously the bigger issue is whether this particular individual sexually exploited one or more of the young basketball players with whom he came into contact.

Agree this basically describes the guy's role in the GDS program.

I like the use of a misogynistic stereotype (I think you were going for something along the lines of "dumb wimmin don't know basketball") to advance your argument that the alleged pedophile was not a sleazy AAU hanger-on. Good one!

GDS is just trying to keep up with Sidwell and the Cathedral Schools, which have had pedophile problems of their own.

Ah yes. Surprised it took until the 13th post for someone to write a nasty post referencing past incidents at other schools.

Nobody on this thread has suggested that GDS was negligent in any way. As anyone who has thought rationally about this understands, background checks cannot catch someone with no past record. If you wanted to reference other incidents to make the point it could happen anywhere and everywhere, that would be fine -- but it appears you just wanted to take cheap shots.
