this may be obvious, but red velvet cupcakery has good red velvet.

personally, i believe if you have ever made red velvet from scratch you will never want to eat it again.

Baked and wired are the best cupcakes in DC, but haven't had their red velvet. But Red Velvet's the best red velvet I have had.

Op here thanks for the great suggestions. I had forgotten about several of these places. Wish wegmanns was closer! Is there still a red velvet in Clarendon or did that close with rabbit grill?

I think it closed with rabbit. Was my favorite red velvet cupcake for sure. Oddly enough , the red velvet cupcake at Nordstrom cafe in Montgomery mall is pretty great - if you are into tart cream cheese frosting. So good !!

Costco's red velvet are pretty good too. Big. (They also have a red velvet cheesecake)

But the amount of red food coloring that goes into red velvet cake is ungodly.
