How many IUI cycles before trying IVF

Anonymous
How many IUI cycles did you do before moving forward with IVF? I have done 5 IUI cycles already and am considering what to do next.

Depends on your age, diagnosis, prognosis, etc.
Only your RE (or the second opinion of an RE) could advise, because he/she knows your case history best, and is "supposedly" the expert. Also, $$$/health insurance may be a deciding factor. Just my 2 cents! Good luck.

For me it only depends on what your insurance covers and/or how much money you have/are comfortable spending on ART.

I have a very low opinion of IUI, so if I had the money/coverage and was comfortable moving to IVF, after 5 failed IUIs that is definitely what I would do.

I have partial insurance coverage for three IUIs "per live birth" and an equal number of covered IVFs. I planned to do three IUIs, and then move on to IVF, but got pregnant on the third. I felt like I was wasting time on the IUIs, so was surprised it worked. If you have the money or insurance for IVF, I would probably move on to that.

Dr Widra said 3, but I'm in my TWW for my 2nd and I'm ready to just move to IVF.

My insurance treats IUI and IVF the same and doesn't require a certain number of tries, so basically I'm just being impatient. DH is more methodical and wants to do all 3 IUIs before we move on.

OP here-- Thanks for all the input. My insurance does not cover IVF, which is partially why I've done so many IUIs.

THanks!

I did five, moved to IVF (also covered by insurance). After 3 failed IVFs I insisted to do IUI again. I got pregnant.

Chances are the same in 100th cycle as in the 1st cycle, it's the view of chances that varies.

My doctor said if you don't get pregnant within 4 IUI cycles then it's very likely that IUI won't work at all. I stopped after 4 and moved to IVF since I was close ro 35. If you are young with tubes open and husband has super sperm in terms of count, motility and morphology, you could try more IUI cycles.

Hmmm. Five tries sounds like a lot. Might be time to move on to the next step.

We did 3 with IUI then moved directly to DE. Maternal age was the deciding factor in our decision. Let's face it, a 65% chance wins every time over a 3% chance.

My doctor recommended 3. I got pregnant on 3rd.
