Wrong name

Anonymous
Just called the hiring manager by a different name on my email , how screwed am I? I am extremely livid right now, have no idea why i said hi Marc instead of hi Paul and I really wanted this job If you were a hiring manager and got called the wrong name, would you even bother considering that candidate?

Send back an immediate reply, apologize and correct yourself.

Re: last message

Paul,

I apologize for mistakenly calling you Marc in my last message. Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

New PP here. It's still not too late to apologize. I do all the hiring at my workplace and this would not be a big deal. Weird twitter posts, back recommendations ... those are reasons why I would change my mind about hiring someone. My name forgotten? Nah. I would have corrected you the first time though. I think it's odd that this person didn't do so.

Well the thing is he sent me a case study, i was supposed to finish the case and send it back within the hour, I emailed him calling him the wrong name and attached the file, about 20 minutes later, I emailed him back attaching another file( did not realize when i was sending 2nd email that i called him the wrong name). He still has not responded to any of the emails. I just don't want to overdo it by sending a third email almost 3 hours later but again feel extremely about this.

Oh and the reason why I think it's a big deal was the reason behind this test (case study) was to test high level communication skills and analytical skills to weed out some candidates

I would leave it alone. It's not a meaningful issue, and you'd just be drawing attention to it.

You might want to freshen up a bit because I can smell your desperation from here.

HR Bitch here: It honestly depends on Marc Paul's mood. He may find it funny, he may write you off as an idiot. Do not email apologizing - that will not make things better.

I'm a hiring manager and I have a really unusual name. I am constantly addressed by the wrong name in emails by candidates. No big deal to me. True, I'd be embarrassed if I did it, especially if the names are common like Marc Paul's, but from the hiring end, you don't know us yet and you're likely applying to many jobs and smart managers just leave it alone or politely correct you.

If I ignored otherwise qualified people based on mistaking my name, I'd be a fool.

+1.

He may not even have noticed. Emailing draws attention to it.

That's why I am embarrassed, it was not an unusual name but a very common name.

Don't sweat it! If they like you, the "name mistake" will not tarnish your image or the hiring decision (imo.)
