How do you clean a self cleaning oven?

Anonymous
Perhaps the stupidest question every posted here, but seriously, how do you use a self cleaning oven? Do you need to add cleaning solution of some type? If so, how and what do you use? Beyond the obvious "self cleaning" button, not sure what to do!

Sorry, just realized I posted in the wrong section!

Self-cleaning means the overn gets really hot and burns the mess away. No chemicals required or probably even recommended.

General instructions:
Empty the oven. Wipe out your oven. Then push the self-clean button.

You should probably read your manual just in case there are some other instructions like don't use X hours before/after that you should be aware of.

At least one some ovens I believe you are supposed to lock the door before using the self-clean feature.

Thank you! That's very helpful!

And some ovens lock themselves to self-clean. Either way, I think the locking is because it heats up so much.

Take out the metal wire shelves before starting the cycle. Else they get discolored.

Make sure you clean out all bits of food because they catch on fire and can start a real blaze in there and if the oven locks until it is done you will spend the whole 1-2 hours wondering if you shoul call the fire dept now or wait till the whole stove is on fire. Obviously like you I had no idea how to do it the first time or what to expect, but I did have a large fireball in mine wich eventually went away but freaked me out a little.

And don't do it right before a special occasion when you will need your oven, just in case something goes wrong. My genius husband started ours on Christmas Eve last year and while it was self-cleaning none of the outlets in my kitchen worked. I was not happy, and we get it to shut off. Luckily once it cooled down everything worked again (not sure what happened, it didn't trip the circuit breaker) but it obviously wasn't installed correctly.

And best to do on a cool day. Because it gets to hot, it makes the house really hot.

also, it usually takes several hours, especially if it really needs it. This reminds me, I need to clean my oven too.

Personally, I hate the smell of it, so I try to do it overnight.

I'm always scared to do this in case there is a fire. Am I being irrational?

Read the manual, and do it when you have a large block of time. I don't like to do it at night (fear of fire).

And, you may want to turn off the furnace - it really heats the house.

Type in the model number of your stove and you can get the manual on line. It really is easy.
