I guess I am one of the "Elite".........

We chose to live in DC because it seemed like an exciting city with all the benefits of city-living but the ability to live in a house and a neighborhood, too. We could have chosen the 'burbs as DH is working in the burbs. We are also at one of the so-called "Big Three" schools. We chose it simply because the setting was very nice, they had a good philosophy and reputation and it seemed a better option than public. We are fortunate that the tuition is not breaking our bank, either. BUT - we are certainly not well-connected, not political and not from prominent families. It's weird to read all the hype on this board about the aura surrounded our child's school and the assumptions everyone makes about the people who send their children there. I have met people in social situations and when I tell them my child goes to such-and-such school - I get such a reaction. Often it is rather cool......I sometimes feel uncomfortable because I feel like these people have instantly made up their mind about me once they have this one piece of information. I certainly do not put on "airs" - my clothes are from discount stores, I don't wear flashy jewelry or dye my hair blonde. My kids are not dressed in designer togs and behaving like little angels. I was recently at an event - and felt like every woman in the room was whispering about me (most of the people in the group were public school...).
Anyway, I am sorry there is so much mystique surrounding these places - I am sure some of the families fit the stereotypes described here - but I can tell you from experience that the bulk of the people I have met at our school seem genuine and down-to-earth (educated and hard working - but down-to-earth).......

congrats
As long as you're happy, who cares what strangers think?

Oh my goodness, I can't believe someone would actually write that.

I agree.

Goodness, those "public school" people were whispering about you! What a horrid experience. Well, at least your child is Elite.

I can't believe someone would actually write the OP's original post. What was the point? Maybe DCUM needed to up its smirk quotient?

OP - if you are so inconspicuous in appearance (and what's wrong with blonde hair?), then what reason would those people have to talk about you? Just because you send your children to private school? I highly doubt it. Maybe it is your attitude and the way you come off to people? You may have meant well by this post but honestly it just did not come off as sincere, perhaps that carries over to your in person communications as well.

"Don't hate me because I'm beautiful . . ."

yes, OP, sigh... how do you do it...

I mean, it must be awful to have those poor public school people whispering about you wherever you go. How sad that they have nothing else in their little lives to think about but you.... you do know that they're just jealous of you, right?

The OP had me in stitches!

My child is at a "Big Three" school and all of the other kids in my neighborhood attend public school. Trust me OP, their parents have far more important things to discuss than the fact that my son is in a "Big Three" school. I am certain they do not give us a second thought. I wager it's all is your head OP, all the whispering - all in your head!

Please stay at the "Big Three" school. You belong there...

If they do not give "us" a second thought - who are all these people posting on these boards - full of resentment towards the so-called Big Three and the Families that have "gotten in" with all their so-called "bribery" and "connections"......?? It seems everyone who does not attend these schools has all kinds of ideas of what goes on at these places....there's a thread about all the perfectly dressed Beauvoir students and their blonde moms, their are threads about the connected families who get into Sidwell, their are threads about the "mystique" surrounding STA and Maret - seems to me that the people who have all these ideas about these places are the sames ones who OP is referring to when she meets whem out in public........

I agree. and look at the reactions to OP's posting. There is definitely something there.

The reaction to OP's post was a reaction to OP's "poor little me" attitude, not specifically to the schools.

OP here - I definitely was not crying "poor little me" - just making an observation.
