Details like teacher assignment, supplies needed, etc. I'm clearly the parent of a upcoming Kindergartner! Thanks

Teacher assignment comes the week before school starts.
Supplies comes at the end of the prior year, but if you are a K parent then you may get a mailing in the summer or you could check the school website (or maybe they will just give you the list at the start of the year?) |
| Our school doesn't send stuff out. You get teacher assignments by going to the school after 4 pm the Thursday before school starts. Class lists are posted on the door. Supply lists are posted online. |
At our school, you can find out about teacher assignment the day of the school open house, either by going to the open house or by calling the office. And the school supply list is on the school website. They also sent home a list the last week of school, but obviously that doesn't work for an upcoming kindergartner! (My suggestion: stock up on glue sticks.) |
| supply lists are online at my school. We get an information packet in August with bus lists, staff changes, stuff like that, and then teacher info is mailed home the week before school starts like wed. or thurs. |
| I had the same question OP. I haven't checked online though. |
| Supplies for our kids elementary and middle school are already online on the school's website. If you have any questions, you can call the school secretary (yes the school has office staff in the summer) and she can let you know how to get the info. you need. |
Our school does this too. |
| How would a new parent know any of this? You'd think they'd send a letter saying that for kids starting K at the school. I'll probably wait until August and if the school website isn't updated then, I'll call the school. |
| New parents would have learned this by attending Kindergarten orientation in May |
Maybe and maybe not. My DD finished K this year. I got all my info from a neighbor. I got nothing from the school about the supplies or when to expect info on class placement. I had to go into the office and get a handout on supplies because they had not yet posted it online (at the end of June). School told me then that my DD would find out her teacher the friday before school when she came to visit the classroom. Now, having said all that, we went through a principal transition last year, so things were not as organized as they could have been. This year I know to wait for class placement AND school supplies were posted online BEFORE the end of the school year. Give new parents a break. It's like breaking into a good old boys network in K and you are on a need to know only basis. |
Not at my school! I attended May orientation. There was no school supply list. Not posted online either. Got info from a neighbor. |
I agree with this second poster. I'm the poster who said 'how is a new parent supposed to know this?'. I attended both kindergarten orientation and the open house back in the early spring, and neither of those mentioned anything about school supplies etc. I asked a parent volunteer at the orientation about the bus route and she had no idea how you'd find out that info. Thankfully my neighbor a few doors down has a child already in the school so I asked her. It would be common sense to send a one page letter to new Kindergarten families saying here's the school supply list, here's how you find out teacher assignments, here's where to look for bus routes etc. I found an old school supply list online, not updated yet for 2013-2014, and I still don't know how/when to find out teacher assignment. What if I had just moved into the neighborhood and didn't know anyone to ask? |
Sounds like they didn't do anything at your Orientation. Didn't you have time to ask the teachers/staff questions? |

If you don't have a supply list for Kindergarten ...I would just buy the following -
1) Backpack 2) Lunch Box , Reusable BPA free water bottle 3) Small hand sanitizer to clip on the backpack I would buy these in double quantity so that you have a set at home too. 1) Box of crayons 2) 2 boxes of non-mechanical pencils 3) 1 blunt tip safe scissors 4) Erasers 5) Sharpener 6) 4 Glue Sticks 7) 2 - 2 pocket plastic folder. 8) 2 composition books. 9) 1 Ruler 10) Plastic pencil box Some schools also ask parents to donate - 1) Ziplock bags and 2) Tissue Papers 3) Lysol Spray 4) Big bottles of Hand Sanitizers 5) Liquid Hand Soap Write your childs name on all the school supplies. Get her a flu-shot as early as possible. My pediatrician has the shots available in Mid - September. I actually opt for going to CVS so that I have it available in August...(Not the mist but the shot). I also load up on Gummy vites from Costco - Multivites, Vitamin C, Zinc and Echinacea ... because they will catch a lot of bugs in the first 3 months of school...horrible. You can get as fancy as you want in buying them cute supplies etc... so that they get really excited. Another thing is to make sure you have hand sanitizer, wipes, tissue paper, and lysol-on-the -go in the car as well. |
