Why doesn't DC HAVE a 'Lab School' equivalent?

The posts on Obama's kids have made me wonder...
Is this area too conservative with regards to education?
Are the Universities too focused on government and law, and not interested in Educational research and training for teachers?

We do, but DCUMers are too set on the big/top 3/4 to even notice.

A university-run private school?

That's a great question. I pine for a Bank Street myself.

Because our universities aren't that great?

or don't see that as a worthwhile venture?

DC also doesn't have a neighborhood like Hyde Park. Lab school feeds off of the Univ. and the neighborhood - and they feed off of eachother. Chicago is a very different city, we just don't have anything like that here.

While we might not have a university run school like Lab School, I don't think any city could beat the range and diversity of schools that we have here in DC. Everything from the very traditional to much more alternative, to our own Lab School (a real gem for kids with LD, we are lucky to have it) to schools that teach to a range of learners. I am a native Washingtonian and I always tell people that because DC has a long history and culture of private schools, there is something here for everyone. And don't forget some of the really fantastic public schools, like the bilingual program at Oyster and the more innovative charter schools.

OP
I mean, a school for those who see education as the product, not means to an end...
A school for the kids of lecturers and professors (middle-class, not upperclass), with teachers who use the latest education research to drive the teaching...

That, wow, costs only $17K for kindergarten and $21.5K for high school!

A relative bargain

I was just thinking about this today! I second about Bank Street in NYC (don't know anything about Univ of Chicago one) In a progressive town like DC, you'd think one of the universities would do this--like Georgetown maybe...Yet, at the same time, parents are so programmed here--often too rigid and closed minded to accept anything different when it comes to educating their kids.

School Without Walls is on George Washington Universtiy campus. It is a special public school where you have to get tested and interviewed like private school. It is a great program at least it was when I went over 10 years ago.

School Without Walls is a high school. I think OP is wondering why our area lacks a real 'lab' school--often pre-k to 12, or K-12. I suppose the area lacks one because there are no sound education/teacher prep programs in D.C? Correct me if I'm wrong, but George Mason or UMBC has the stronger teacher ed. programs, or at least the larger ones?

Doesn't University of Maryland have a good early childhood ed program?
