Ibuprofen for heavy menstrual flow

Anonymous
At my checkup several months ago I asked my doctor what I could do about extremely heavy, and getting heavier with age, menstrual flow. Her first 2 recommendations were BC pill or Mirena. I'm not interested in either - I've had Essure for sterilization so I don't really feel like taking BC.

So she suggested ibuprofen as soon as it starts. This is the first month I've remembered. I was googling dosage amount and it seems to be all over the place - regular dosage (200 mg), double dosage (without going over daily recommended amount), etc.

If you've had success with ibuprofen lightening your flow, what dose do you take?

Ibuprofen has never lightened my flow, but it has helped with cramps and discomfort.

Did not want to read that.

I don't usually have cramps when I get my period (only at ovulation) so I really just need something to help with flow.

Try Lysteda for your flow. I too never get cramps during my super heavy flow, but it's like a slaughter house for many days. Lysteda is a pill you take on the 4 heaviest days, three times a day. It works miracles! I do have a day or two of fairly heavy flow, but then it lightens up a lot.

Would Lysteda help if your period is short? Mine is only 3 days. I know it doesn't seem like long to have to deal with it. But during those 3 days, I go through a supersize tampon in less than an hour and have to wear a pad in addition to my tampon. I hate working during those 3 days for fear I'm going to get stuck in a meeting and overflow the tampon. I never trust pads.

I'm seriously considering ablation.

I would just go with ablation and be done with it.

Of course Ibuprofen will not help with flow. It is an anti inflammatory. It will somewhat help with cramps. However, i find Pamprin more effective all around.

My dr suggested the same thing with the advil. It upset my stomach so I did not keep with it. It must help some people or these doctors would not be suggesting it.

I too have a very heavy flow -- I go through two super plus tampons and a pad in less than two hours sometimes. I take ibuprofen for the pain and for migraines I get right before my period. It does nothing to reduce the flow, unfortunately.

Have been considering ablation or Mirena myself, however I think I'm just a few years away from menopause at this point so I may just stick it out. I hadn't heard about Lysteda. I will have to look into this.

If you're done having kids, go for an ablation. I did it a year and a half ago (at age 45) and can't believe I wasted time trying to figure out other solutions.

Yes, ablation. Novasure. Do it and don't look back.

Thanks. I think I will go for ablation. Meanwhile, I'm going to try the ibuprofen this month in hopes it will help. I'm just starting tonight, which means tomorrow will be horrendous. And of course we're going away for the night for our anniversary!

I didn't qualify for ablation or an IUD because of a think c/s scar. Still just power through but not willingly.

*thin* sorry.
