are cherries dyed to look redder?

i have a friend who swears cherries are dyed a deeper shade of red and that you can "tell" the dyed ones because they leave red juice on your fingers,
she also claims that her son is very allergic to the red dye.
there are whole foods organic cherries we are discussing.

i think its total BS, but who knows, maybe its ok if the dye is organic, too?

i've just never ever heard of this.

marishino (sp?) ones are bleached and then dyed and very bad for you. yuck!

but i've never heard that for fresh ones. i've picked real cherries fresh off a tree that have red juice!

BS that red juice is a sign of dyeing. I have turned my entire hands purple feasting on cherries from my family's cherry trees and I can assure you they have never been treated with any kind of dye.

Your friend is a total goofball. Fresh cherries are not dyed.

Me too. Grew up near an orchard and have pitted thousands of cherries by hand and ended up with dyed hands. Your friend is a loon.

No the cherry fairies come out at night. Half circle the tree and sing. The other half are hard at work dying the cherries.

OP here. Thank you for the replies. She acted completely shocked and horrified that I was unaware of dyeing of organic cherries and how that due leads to allergies and behavior problems. Dingbat is right.

True story - as a child I would have awful tantrums. I remember being 3-4 yrs old and crying uncontrollably and not knowing what was wrong. I would cry until I hyperventilated or vomited. My parents finally made the connection - the red dye in the kool aid served at church potluck and the red dye in Popsicles! The took away all artificially red foods and it stopped. That was in the early 80's and I don't think they make that dye anymore.

Also - most salmon in the grocery store is dyed to look pinker.

Oranges are often painted to be orange all over, instead of the natural mottled green-orange. But that's just the surface. I confess I don't quite see how you could evenly dye the flesh of an entire fruit... much less millions of small individual ones.

Oh yes, stay the hell away from maraschino cherries. My mom dyed them for a living. She said the bleach was so concentrated that one drop burns a hole in their shoes instantly. And never ever eat the ones in Japan. They prefer a certain shade of red that's particularly toxic.

If you go cherry picking you'll notice that those cherries produce red juice as well.

It's not that the salmon pieces are dyed, but rather that most farmed salmon are fed colorants. Wild-caught is not affected (although I am sure there is farmed salmon out there being fraudulently labeled as wild-caught).

I just have been sick with sore throat burning sinuses and itching ears. One day I had pizza it gave me heart burn so I took a antacid and got sick again so I looked at ingredients and it had red dye . So I stopped eating anything with red dye. So today I got fresh cherries and I felt it come back immediately!! So I think they put red dye on fresh cherries too.it takes about 24 hour for it to clear up.

No they don’t.
