Offensive Emails at Work

Anonymous
I work in an account management position where I am constantly bringing new clients on board. I brought a new client on board at the end of last week and it turns out that this person does not have all of their marbles. They have emailed me over 100 times since the end of last week, sometimes sending me up to one email per minute.

The emails are very offensive...they include name calling, curse words, comments about sexual orientation, etc. The emails are in general very toxic.

Every day I come in to work to multiple offensive emails and the emails continue throughout the day.

I have talked to this person on the phone several times and they do not behave this way on the phone. The phone conversations are civil.

Here are some excerpts from the emails that I am receiving:

"I have to sell and pay off over a million worth because a group of ass wholes gay men they are all gay men attacked me because I look okay in a gown and they stole my gowns

he married me and he was gay I was a patsy we were married for only six months he would not touch me he prefers whores because he is gay and would not love a wife"

"I think someone told him to rape me and take over my sales and you to be a bitch to me and give me a smart ass brush off this is their MO for theft it does not work get rich quick with six months to life in jail"

"It is summer time and his illegal lawyers and trying to leach a vacation out of my blood they have leached for the last 15 years leaving me with just about nothing while they play and take much life vermin. "

How would you handle this situation if you were receiving these offenisive emails at work from a new client?

Well, that's strange.....are you sure her email hasn't been hacked? If they aren't like that on the phone....well, I don't have another explanation for you.

I would fire them as a client. Only a matter of time before hey turn the crazy on you.

I don't believe that her emails are being hacked because she mentions very specific things in her emails from our phone conversations. Also, on the phone she always finds a way to sneak in talking about how she has been wronged by the ex husband but on the phone it sound more coherent as opposed to the incoherent rambling emails she sends.

I would ask them if they were aware I was receiving e-mails with offensive content. Just be direct with the question. "Hi, NAME, just wanted to check with you because I'm receiving dozens of e-mails from your mailbox, and a lot of it has offensive content. Is it possible your e-mail has been hacked?" If she's been hacked you're doing her a favor. If not, you're putting her on alert that you don't appreciate those e-mails.

I agree with the poster who said if this continues and she is purposely sending you these e-mails, fire her as a client.

What time are they being sent? A former co-worker of mine had started sending out crazy emails & voicemails at odd hours, we figured she was probably drunk.

I do wonder if she might have some sort of voice-activated typing program that is just picking up background noise, like a soap opera or Jerry Spinger.

I agree with this. Also, if you have an HR person, I would bring it to his/her attention. In most businesses, your employer would be obligated to make a reasonable effort to remove the offensive material from your work environment. They may have to email the person.

I also agree -- great advice here. This is how I would handle it, too.

Have the intern with a sense of humor read them instead of you. You can have him give you summaries in case the client asks what you thought.
