Montgomery County schools prepare in case coronavirus requires closings

MCPS plans - What a joke! I guess they can mail off packets to kids w/o computer access.

Montgomery County, Maryland’s public school system continues normal operations, and school and health officials say they are preparing should that change.

Montgomery County Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Monifa McKnight said plans for remote instruction and hard copy lessons would be ready should schools have to close due to the coronavirus. She was repeating a message delivered in a briefing Tuesday with county officials.

I also heard that the teachers weren't told they had to be preparing these hard copy packets, so they're scrambling.

What a sh-tshow.

Scrambling?

Scrambling to put them together in short order.

I suggest you read the accounts of young people who developed it in Wuhan China. It made a flu sound like a walk in the park. Bad chest cold is now how it is in some people. The 80% have mild colds may or may not be accurate.

Here is a first person description from a healthy 25 year old. It does sound pretty much like a flu.

Well that guy probably would have been better sooner if he didn't drink the whiskey every night. Alcohol lowers your immune system. Funny how he got worse the day after he drank the whiskey.

The whiskey seems to be the only thing that kept him alive! Or at least it's the only thing that gave him any relief.

Whiskey actually raises your immune system - I might need to run out and stock up! Quite a few articles about it.

I don’t know enough to refute this, but can some doctor confirm for me the, i think, obvious proposition that there’s no indication whiskey fights viruses?

It’s already here...and everywhere. People are inadvertently passing germs without realizing they’ve been exposed and are carrying it.

Do you all realize that these people had mild cold symptoms and have already basically recovered? Did anyone read the article? They are not on their deathbed.

This guy who had a horrible case and recovered got "better" twice during his ordeal. Did you read his first hand account of what it was like as a young, healthy person?

That guy said he didn't take the medicine the doctor prescribed for it, so we don't know how he would have done if he had taken the medication.

I don't understand your point. It was an antibiotic and he had a virus. The only way the antibiotic would help is if his pneumonia became a bacterial infection. The fact that he recovered from his severe pneumonia is probably due to his healthy immune system. Has nothing to do with whatever he was prescribed or not.

The mortality in the 0 to 9 years old is zero.
The mortality in the age group 9 to 19 is NOT ZERO, it is 0.2 %... that is not nothing.. that is 2 people in 1000.

Let me bring it home for you:

MCPS has how many students?: 162,680

With this in mind.. remember 2 kids in one thousand would die.. potentially.. So if we have 162 thousands students..
and all or the most vulnerable will get sick then potentially the loss of life can be as great as 324.

Considering all children with immune issues, I am pretty sure you will easily find 324 kids needing nebulizer. It is
not that all kids will get sick but chances are the ones with already underlying problems might.

So NOT zero but 324 children's lives are at stake..

Whoever tells you there is no risks.. kindly share the table:..

Maybe he should have taken the antibiotics

+1 what was he thinking?

Dumb Q: would that have done anything? This is a virus, no? Or is the pneumonia complication bacterial though caused by a virus?

It just makes the pain more bearable, I imagine.

Why don’t they just let kids without a PC or iPad at home check out chrome books?

Yes, it is awful. The scary part is his ordeal was “mild”. Those with severe symptoms end up in the ICU.

Thanks for this link.

Three friends in Northern Italy had/have it - two sisters and a BIL. My pal, the single sister, got over hers quickly. Her sister and her husband had a harder time, as both are still sick (week three). Her husband is immunocompromised, too. So the doctor is making house visits, as they are quarantined.

If something isn't done immediately our health care system will be overrun. And don't tell me this is just a cold. They don't shut down the economy of China for a cold. It's like we're saying we're fine with thousands dying.

Just a guess, but methinks fed telework pandemic procedure is coming’ soon, folks!! Stock up on tp or enjoy using paper towel! And good luck finding alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Nerds gonna be wrestling over that liquid gold.

Yesterday Tito's vodka made it clear that 80 proof (40%) alcohol cannot be effectively used to sanitize.

Makes me glad I ran my first products back through my brandy-making-contraption i built....and have a handle of 170 proof ethanol solution if I need it. woo hoo!

There aren't enough in many cases. MCPS isn't a 1-1 system across the board.

Fortunately, I have staff in my house to handle a school closure. DW taught for 10 years prior to becoming a full time mom. now with a 12YO and 2 kindergarteners, her stock is UP if MCPS closes.
The learnin' need not stop. 'cept maybe for nice weather.

Yes he sounds like a very down to earth guy. And that sounds extremely uncomfortable to say the least.

Were these people on the Grand Princess to Mexico City out of SF? That would fit the timing and the international location. In every other case, the international location has been released without compromising privacy.

If so, there could be other people in our area or other places in the US who caught it on the ship. IF not, please say where the MD people were so we can put that to rest for now.

And tell us what happened to the passengers that disembarked in SF and left CA. CA is tracking down the Californians. Who is tracking the others?
