Wootton complained and lobbied for a new building as theirs is unsafe due to mold and other issues. MCPS responded given the redistricting of all schools with two new school buildings to move Wootton to Crown. That's not good enough.

Not good enough because... it's not in exactly the same place? Again I'm failing to see the issue -- aren't they getting what they asked for?

Is any other high school that needs renovation being requires to move in order to get it? The only example of this happening was Blair, and that involved YEARS of community engagement before it happened. This is all about MCPS screwing up and using Wootton to fix things.

There simply is no precedent for this and you know it.

But again why is it a problem? The school wanted a new building, they’re being given a new building.

Let's call it for what it is. They don't want the demographics of their school to change. Full stop.

Right and the percent by which their demographics are changing are minimal compared to other swings seen in this boundary study, like with Northwest or QO which show major swings.

I mean, it's the same thing it always is. If you see a "debate" about public schools and you can't understand the outsized reaction, the answer is always always race and class.

It isn’t. But for uneducated it is easier to just ignore facts.

Then please explain it like I’m five because I really don’t understand what the issue is

You’re five. It doesn’t concern you.

No precedent? No problem--you're trailblazers now! Feel better now that we flipped the script and put you in the power position?

In the Clarksburg study, the Cabin Branch families did not want to be moved to a dilapidated middle school, and they got moved there anyway. I highly doubt the decision makers will have any empathy for the Save Wootton crowd for having to move to a brand new beautiful building. Give me a break.

Not about empathy anymore.

Yes, many schools need repaired or replaced but there isn't money.

You assume that. You don't know that.

Maybe they want to keep their neighborhood school, just like the community in Silver Spring wants to keep SSIMS and Sligo Creek ES in their neighborhood. Is Silver Spring not "wanting the demographics of their school/s" to change?

I assume they are lazy and don't want to drive their kids back and forth for activities and sports and if they miss the bus.

Like many on this board, the PP’s knee jerk reaction is to cry r-cism because that immediately discredits the complainer and shuts down the debate. This isn’t about demographics- Wootton already has a student population that is majority minorities (albeit not the “right” minorities according to PP). However, that student population is made up of high achievers, as evidenced by their academic performance and top graduation rate. Wootton families are rightly concerned that the academic performance of Wootton will decline because of a 40% increase I students from lower performing schools.

MCPS is putting money (and covering up its gross mismanagement thereof) over academic achievement, as it always seems to do these days.

Crown can still have academic achievement and it will be a mixed school. They can still offer high level classes if the principal allows it.
