If your kids go to Loudoun you: - didn’t have a nonsensical early release for a tornado which was forecasted to arrive at the same time as early release. - don’t have elementary school monthly early release releases on Wednesdays to contend with. - started school later - had five day school weeks in September - combined teacher work days with the Winter break -have one day off for Memorial day - finish earlier. There are quite a few more than “1–2 exceptions” and since the calendars are public, why would you lie about that? If you had to live with the consequences of the calendar, you’re advocating you would feel differently about it. Which is why teachers should be hired out of Fairfax County first. Subbing is advertised as a route to full-time FCPS employment. So it looks like they have plenty of candidates. |
You forgot to add: if your kids go to Loudoun for elementary, you have 7 straight years of a 7:20 or 7:30 am start time. |
Young kids with an early start time?!!?! Its as though any working parent was consulted in the creation of this schedule. |
| Fairfax county teachers can’t afford to live in Fairfax. That’s why they don’t live here. |
Incorrect. Their higher Fairfax County taxpayer funded salaries just buy more in PW and Loudoun. When I first moved to the area, I made significantly less than first year teachers, and could still rent a two bedroom apartment. Teachers who want Loudon McMansions drive up the number of snow days and push for “safety” early release. It’s time to hire teachers who have some skin in the game. |
You've been attacking teachers for 22 pages now. It's time to give it a rest. Teachers aren't responsible for the calendar, and screaming louder isn't going to change that fact. Teachers aren't responsible for snow days, early releases, or anything else you've decided to blame them for. You seem to have very little (no?) understanding of the profession. If your endgame is to change the calendar, then teachers aren't your audience. They don't create the calendar. Most of them are just as impacted by it as you are since they are parents, as well. Some of them have even stated their own dissatisfaction on this thread. If your endgame is just to gleefully upset and insult teachers, then ask yourself how that benefits your own children. Teacher morale is already at an all-time low because of the conditions of the job. Your wild, blanketed insults hit the people sacrificing their own time for your children... and that's happening whether you choose to believe it or not. If you really care about the calendar as much as you claim, then do something about it. Attacking teachers is ineffective and counterproductive. |
Seeing suggestions for improvement as “attacks” is not a good professional trait. Fairfax would be better served if they followed New Jersey’s example in prioritizing local hires. Obviously, there’s plenty of advocacy for calendar changes. |
We both know your comments were not made in the spirit of “suggestions.” You have demeaned the profession by accusing teachers of prioritizing themselves over their students. You have disregarded the voices of teachers, telling them their lived experiences are incorrect. So no, your comments aren’t in good faith. Let’s not pretend otherwise. |
Teacher who lives in Loudoun. When I started, I lived in Fairfax County. We only moved because we got more for our money in Loudoun. I commute because I love my school community. Literally very few teachers actually live in their school community. I grew up in NY and teachers lived in a lot of surrounding areas for a variety of reasons. Some teacher live in certain areas due to spouses job. My husband is a fed and has coworkers from all over MD, VA and even a few WVA. While I love my school, I am not happy with a lot of decisions that FFX County is making. Limiting teachers to only working to where they live would mean losing quality teachers who are dedicated to their communities and would be impossible due to how transient this area is. |
Did op vote? Individual parents don't decide those things was more the point. |
Yes this is common, thank you for confirming. I wouldn’t fire Loudoun teacher's, i would limit hiring and tenure to county residents. New Jersey has some of the best schools in the country and many of their state roles have residency requirements. |
Well thank goodness you aren’t kind of Fairfax county and your ideas aren’t in place! |
The agenda is affordability. Getting county residents who vote into jobs is a great start. Getting teachers and parents aligned on who bears the consequences of these schedules is another benefit. Keeping tax dollars in the county is a third. |
Yes but you are not required to live in their school community town you teach in. I have friends who live in one area and commute 30 minutes to a different area in NJ. The schools are not run by the counties in NJ. |
Except there is a teacher shortage. All of Northern VA is competing for quality teachers. 40 percent of teaching staff lives outside of FFX County. They would not be able to be replaced. It is not like FFX residents cannot get a job as a teacher. There are plenty every year! |
