It’s much faster than that if it’s done right. Other school districts which have metal detectors have no issue in the morning.

No amount of streamlined efficiency will fix the issue of getting 2500 kids in through 4 metal detectors. Especially when kids will have to empty pockets and backpacks of all permitted metal items before going in. That's why the airport has like 30 TSA stations and every stadium has like 50 security checkpoints.

They have one. He just happened to not be on site.

That's because it's not an SRO but a CEO. A CEO does not stay inside the school nor walk the halls unless invited by the Principal. A CEO is shared with the cluster.

Bring back SROs.

No, we don't need police in schools and they don't really stop shit like this from happening, anyway. See Uvalde or Parkland, for example.

Yes, we do. A good officer could shoot the shooter. There are plenty of situations where they do step in and resolve it. The two you are choosing are the worst but there are many times SRO's save lives. Some schools have an officer sitting outside a lot of time. Ours do.

All schools needs metal detectors. The school is huge. An officer cant cover the whole school. They would not have prevented a one off shooting targeting a specific individual. A police officer may be able to reduce the amount of people killed in a mass shooting but most times, they won’t be able to stop a shooting from happening in the first place.

The WUSA story said that the student had a ghost gun. Not an expert here, but wouldn't a metal detector be useless in that instance? (obviously it would prevent other firearms from getting through....just saying that I don't know if it would have made a difference here).

I personally think that re-instating the SRO program and focusing on prevention is the most critical need here.

MCPS closed down the juvenile facilities long ago.. not other option. And, define normal. All these kids were "normal" till an incident happened. Many kids go without the mental health and other supports they need.

Not true - Blair Ewing and RICA still exist and run - some kids even live at RICA, and the SESES program also is a self-contained program in select schools for children with emotional disturbances: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/special-education/programs-services/behavior-and-emotional-support/

RICA and SESES are for when actual mental illness or disability make it impossible to be in the classroom, and they are also supposed to be on grade level. Kids who bring ghost guns to school to shoot other kids they are beefing with have a different sort of support need.

Ammo casings likely would set off the alarm but yeah

Does anyone know if the school has shared resources for the kids and families for counseling services and mental health support?

A ghost gun just means it was made at home. That can be a 3D printed gun or it can be a gun made from a kit, but they generally contain metal and all of them use metal ammunition. There's at least one 3D printed all plastic handgun out there, but it doesn't work very well (it tends to shatter when fired) and I really doubt that's what this kid had.

These are not DJJ. Kids with ankle bracelets and charged go via DJJ. There used to be Noyes but they shut it down. Two very separate things. Most kids with mental health issues are not violent.

Sure. But most violent kids do have underlying mental health issues.

To pretend otherwise is disingenuous.

Sure, but just as it's not fair to Wootton students to have known violent kids there, it wouldn't be fair to the other Ewing kids for them to be placed there. We need dedicated schools for students with violent behaviors.

Just as weapons get more "sophisticated" so should the detectors.

They probably have staff on sight but I wouldn't trust them if your child is that traumatized. The voltures on facebook are posting offering mental health treatment (some 1/2 off, some full price) - really gross.

Can't read all the posts. Any word on the status of the victim? I heard they were shot in the chest.

It gets quite expensive to replace these security tools every 3-4 years. I am willing to pay more in taxes but is everyone else?

Metal detectors deter kids from bringing guns to school. It's a fact. They also would detect a ghost gun as it contains metal. There are very sophisticated security screening systems that include infrared and other methods to get kids in quickly and safely and still detect hazardous weapons. Look up what they use in NYC public schools. MCPS is out dated with their methods. The school needs more guidance counselors to actually work with kids in crisis and not just write college refs and do IEPs. The programs that bring therapists to schools are under staffed and have huge waitlists. Bullying prevention must be dealt with. Zero tolerance for bullying should actually exist. No kid should feel scared to go to school or worry about getting jumped.

They sent a generic list of mental health resources to parents this morning. Something was supposed to happen during 8th period today but some kids don’t have an 8th period class so they miss out on that. Then again, the shooting took place during 8th period so that means they are kids who weren’t present like my child. Still, many of these kids are scared and upset by what happened. I think this is being mishandled making kids come back to the building so quickly.

And now the power is out. What a sh*t show!
