Nobody Wants This on Netflix

I was appalled at how they treated the “shiksa” aspect - as if by looking at someone you would know whether or not they’re Jewish. My best friend is a very blonde woman and is Jewish. Plenty of blonde people are Jewish. The scene in the synagogue when everyone looks hostilely at Joanne was so over the top.

And yes, the Jewish stereotypes abound as well, especially in the portrayal of Jewish women. Wow. I didn’t expect any of that and am somewhat turned off now.

Morgan is definitely not into Sasha and even if Sasha finds Morgan attractive, I don't think he actually wants to be with her or leave Esther.

Rather I think they just bonded over having similar dynamics with their "main character" siblings and I think their personalities are complimentary. But not in a romantic way.

If Sasha left Esther or even expressed any interest in cheating on her o think Morgan would lose all respect for him. His marriage is the biggest indication that he is smarter and stronger than he comes off because Esther is clearly awesome and he obviously adores her and respects her.

I think Morgan and Sasha are just meant to be a sign that actually Joanne and Noah actually could work and that their families and lives are more compatible than at first glance.

I hope so! I think more likely there will be a kiss or something and then they'll realize they were wrong... But might not be able to salvage the marriage. It plays more as fear than respect.

I feel like you’re thinking of Anna Kendrick.

NP. Bell is a fantastic singer. She was Anna in Frozen.

Do you think she reenacts frozen for her daughters?

Another NP - wow, I had completely forgotten that!! What a beautiful voice.

Just finished this. It reminded me that people in Hollywood are actually quite stupid, mostly. The great cast is the only thing that saves this.

When Bell's character shows up to the synagogue and camera zooms in on the woman playing Brody's mom I knew she was going to call her a shiksa before she spoke. And agree that the pushy women desperate to marry their daughters off to Brody were silly.

It was also INSANE when Brody's girlfriend digs up the engagement ring and just starts wearing it without talking to him and then tries to just force an engagement. This combined with the scene at the synagogue really rubs me the wrong way because it portrays all the Jewish women in his life as marriage-obsessed with no interest in romance and essentially justifies him doing something he knows will stir up a ton of trouble by pursing a relationship with a non-Jewish woman. It has "look what you made me do" vibes.

Having said all that I do enjoy the scenes between Brody and Bell and I actually do think this could be an interesting premise (without the broad Jewish tropes that are especially harsh towards Jewish women). It's a shame they went this route and betrays a really laziness -- this was the only way you could think of to make it funny. Lame.

100% agree. I find it bizarre that in the making of this show, no one spoke up about the very obvious stereotypes and maybe toning it down.

And all the obviously Jewish names - Noah, Sasha, Rebecca, Miriam, Esther… seriously?? Jews can also have names like Jennifer or Brad or Ashley or Jeff. So, so annoying. It’s like they felt the audience wouldn’t grasp who was a Jewish character unless they laid on all the stereotypes as thick as possible.

That said, I agree about liking Joanne and Noah and their chemistry. Just wish someone in charge hadn’t dumbed down the other parts.

On the other hand, I think Adam Brody is really cute and see that in real life he’s a secular Jew.

“Secular Jew” is more offensive than most of the clearly intentional stereotypes in the show. You can’t be a “secular Jew.”

It’s a religion.

I think PP meant that he does not practice it, but he is ethnically Jewish. So, there are many secular Jews. Just like there are religious Jews.

+1
It’s not offensive at all. My dad was a secular Jew. Not at all interested in the religion but ethnically Jewish.

Christopher Columbus was ethnically Jewish too. Who knows about his beliefs.

Everyone is Jewish, so everyone can date everyone!

Anonymous wrote:The rabbi's mom actress was the Jewish mom in the show Crazy Ex Girlfriend.

That show has a very similar scene at a camp where the male crush is working. The hot male crush (who all the teen girls are crushing on, too) ends up ignoring his (ex) girlfriend. She then tries to be all hip older friend to the teen girls, like "hey grrrllfriend!" The teens totally find her cringe and tell it like it is.

Like the same plot! How weird, right?

She played the mom in, ‘Kissing Jessica Stein,’
And she was a loving, patient mom. That acceptance speech she gave to Jessica when Jessica was trying to hide her new love interest has always sat with me. Love that actress!

I didn’t think Esther was “awesome” at all. She was a complete jerk to Joanne.

Everyone was terrible / prejudiced / discriminatory to Joanne in a way that would not fly if the tables were turned. But in her own community Esther was an interesting person and she really started to see that she could flaunt the rules towards the end. I mean her MIL wouldn't even let her in her kitchen. Who would put up with a MIL like that? Nobody on DCUM for sure.
