I don't care much about demography of schools changing but I have enough stress in my life to not add possibility of 25% decline after buying a house.

This is what structural racism looks like. “I’m not a racist but I don’t want my home value to go down if those kids are in my school.”

Are you out of your mind? There is nothing racist about not wanting to lose 25% of biggest purchase of your life.

Not the PP, but their comment was about structural racism, not individual racism. Structural racism in this case is a school zoning map that has traditionally been designed to preserve segregation. If that zoning is disrupted and integration ensues, then housing prices will drop.

If both residential zoning and school boundaries had included integration from the beginning, there would not have been an artificially inflated "zone" of high-priced segregated communities.

The Montgomery County school boundaries are not drawn to “include segregation” and the big report they did a few years found it would be difficult to have more diverse schools without busing, which is why that whole project died with a whimper. The main problem is zoning and not allowing more housing types in the most desirable areas. The other problem is that developers don’t build many family-sized units where multifamily housing is allowed.

Not to mention that 90 or 95% of the people surveyed said they wanted their kids to remain at their current school or be moved to a closer school if they had to move. They didn't care about diversity at all. The only people who wanted kids bused based on diversity were a few BOE members without kids in MCPS and the SMOB who was graduating in a few months.

No way they would take the largest Elementary school in MoCo and send it to over crowded BCC, they would have to take two away from it in its place.

Woodacres is basically Whitman/Pyle

I agree that move will not happen. But Wood Acres is not even close to the largest elementary school in MoCo. And BCC is not overcrowded.

The official 2022-2023 enrollment for Woodacres is 605. The building has a capacity of 752. Where did you get the incorrect idea that Woodacres is the largest elementary school in Montgomery County?

Also, as another PP said: BCC's enrollment is 2335, BCC's capacity is 2475, so BCC is actually under crowded.

Gotta keep the misinformation flowing! All part of the narrative.

But also has a boundary right near Westland

It could be possible to reassign Wood Acres to Westland for MS but stay at Whitman for HS. But then Westland would be split-articulated, which MCPS often says they don't like, yet it happens all over the county anyway.

It can’t be even close. PBES has more than that and it’s only 3-5.

The largest elementary schools are Ashburton and Farmland. They each have more than 800 students.

Indeed. The WJ elementary schools average more than 720 students per school.

By keeping everything in one thread it's an opportunity for MCPS to bury posts they don't like. Post a new thread if you feel the topic is worth discussion by parents.

I doubt TPMS boundaries will change. But Blair's are going to need to be trimmed back to relieve it from being 600ish students over capacity. No one knows where they will make the changes.

What if MCPS move the SMAC magnet and CAP from Blair Northwood, it would take 600+ students from Blair.

These programs are woven into the fabric of that school, so it's not a practical choice. It makes more sense to adjust the boundary on the edges near Northwood and possibly Einsten by creating space there with Woodward.

It's not impossible, but it would mean some specific design/build decisions that I've not seen on the table for Northwood. More recording spaces and expandable classrooms for the CAP kids (a pretty small design change), and more lab space for the SMCS kids.

A better idea is to incorporate Whitman and BCC into the DCC. They are both down county and we could offload more students while reducing the segregation at those schools.

This sounds logical. Not sure logistically how it would work. Whitman and B-CC would likely need to develop unique academic programs to qualify for membership in the DCC.

Offering some unique application programs at those schools to DCC students to create pull and improve diversity without forced busing at those schools does seem like a win.

The best thing would be to get rid of the DCC. The special DCC programs (other than CAP which also has non-DCC students who attended certain middle schools) are not strong and having students in a neighborhood scattered at different DCC schools decreases the sense of community. The DCC has not been successful.

The DCC should be expanded! Also, the DCC should be abolished!

Both are true. The fact that there is only one DCC- essentially school choice, available to a part of the county but not the rest is not right. Either create multiple DCCs to ensure equity or abolish it entirely.

You can move down county.

Unrealistic and stupid solution. Not everyone can or wants to or should move to down county. That's why there is housing in upcounty and mid-county. Make it available for all or get rid of it. MCPS is all about equity, right?

Make WHAT available for all? The DCC and the NEC?

No, not just DCC or the NEC. There should be additional consortiums in other parts of the county so that all MCPS students have SCHOOL CHOICE, not just students in Silver Spring or Takoma Park.

You have choice as you choose where you live. One issue is the cost of busing. If you are in a W school, you moved there to keep away from families like us. Remember?

Small-minded response. Hello-- Montgomery County is more than the Silver Spring schools and the W schools.

What are you complaining about? Do you want a UCC? You get to choose among QO, NW, SV, Clarksburg, and Watkins Mill? Why would you want that?

Same reason why you like the DCC. Why should Silver Spring/TP residents be the only people with school choice?

I live in the upcounty, I am indifferent to the DCC and the NEC, and I don't know what purpose a UCC would serve.

DP. I've watched county politics for years. The reason why MCPS caters to Silver Spring is - voters. Silver Spring has the highest concentration of voters in MC.

Didn't you ever wonder why the Magnets were only at Blair and Poolesville where not many residents outside of SS / Germantown can reach them? Yup, Germantown is the 2nd most populated voting area now boosted by the outlet communities in Clarkesville.

Both the BOE and Council know that if they carry enough voters in SS, they can overwhelm voting of just about every other city / voting district within Montgomery County. It's a brilliant strategy - just sucks to be a parent anywhere else in Montgomery County.

I hear the City Council, in Rockford, is totally dominated by the Tenley Park mafia.
