1830: Why don't the advocates for Native Americans build spacious housing for them 1-2 weeks away from the East Coast?
2023: Why don’t advocates for the homeless build spacious housing for them 1-2 hours away from DC? |
Sometimes DCUM is like lifting a big rock and seeing all of the gross, scary people that live in your society. No, we can’t force poor people to go live in another state because you find them inconvenient. |
WTF kind of stupid ass analogy is that? So you're telling us the homeless drugged out white guy sprawled in front of a restaurant in Chinatown pissing on himself is in fact its original owner but was driven out by force by evil colonialists? |
Tell that to Greg Abbott and Ron DSantis. |
Why doesn’t the any lobby, including the homeless industrial complex, live in the mess they make? |
This. Why don’t we address the issues at a community level instead of turn our backs on neighbors/community members. |
How about looking at this issue a different way?
We could have an incentives for people to become social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, caregivers, teachers and if you get free or heavily reduced college tuition, you work with the veteran, underserved youth and/or homeless population for 3-4 years. A mental health crisis or traumatic event is why a large proportion of people fall into homelessness. Help people before they fall into that circumstance. There are not enough mental healthcare providers in the United States. Somehow going into a career where you care for and heal people (except for going to medical school to be a surgeon) is not highly valued in our society. |
Too expensive to do in DC, which is why someplace farther out would be more viable. |
That should have been done in their hometowns rather than in DC. A huge percentage of DC's homeless are not from DC. |
DC law says that it just takes an opinion from a qualified medical professional to involuntarily commit someone for treatment. |
NIMBY |
They're high, strung out, drunk, schizo, and more. They refuse help, handouts, or any type of opportunity to be better. There's a reason they're homeless. You think you can reason with these people with your ultimatum? That's cute. |
DC law says someone with mental health or substance abuse issues can be involuntarily committed, all it takes is a qualified medical professional to make the call. If they don't like it then maybe they should check out someplace where the law is different. |
DP... it's not NIMBYism. It's fiscally sensible. |
Give incentives. Help them settle in low cost of living area where their $ will stretch the most. I want to live in Manhattan in a nice condo but I can't. I need to go live where I can afford to live. |
