In my upstate NY county, there’s an almost 1:1 association between Italian-Americans and the Republican Party. As Democrats have relied more on the Black vote, ethnic whites have fled to the right. It’s pretty much standard-issue racism.

Italians have more or less become accepted as White, so of course they want to pull up the ladder.

As most of the hardest core racists still don’t accept Italians as White and especially don’t accept Catholicism, the Italian Americans who vote Republican are voting against their own interests. Not that they think of it that way, of course.
