teachers: how many 3rd grade students got straigh As in your class this past year?

i'm curious what grades would a 'middle of the pack' student get. tks!

"Middle of the pack" doesn't really mean anything in terms of grades b/c the children in FCPS are graded based on how they satisfied the academic expectations. There is no longer a comparison with other kids in the class. But, to answer your question, I would think a child who is considered "average" would be getting "3"s -- as in mostly meets the expectations, but not all the time. A child who isn't really meeting the expectations as much as he/she should would be getting 2s and a child who is really out-to-lunch would get 1s. A child who is meeting the standards for nearly every assignment/discussion would get 4s.

It wouldn't surprise me if 80% of a class was getting 3's and 4's on a given subject. In that situation, I'm not sure what you would call "middle of the class." Middle of the class in some schools might be a "4" but middle of the class at other schools might be a "2."

It's that important for you to feel that your child is superior?

What's this number stuff you're prattling on about? OP was asking about the letter grade A/B/C/D/F. You know, how schools actually grade.

OP--are you seriously hoping that 3rd grade teachers are going to flock to this thread and remember what numbers (not grades) kids earned?

You must be old. Schools don't use letter grades any more, at least in elementary.

FCPS, which teaches the majority of kids in this part of NOVA, uses a number grading system (1 through 4)

Stupid system, but to respond to your statement, you have outdated experience.

Not in this neck of the woods. You'uns would know this if yous lived in NOVA.

So much misinformation.

The districts in the state of Virginia do not have a common grading system. Fairfax County does use a grading system in the elementary schools which assigns grades using the numbers 1-4. It is a standards based grading system, but not all districts are standards based.

You mean there's a Va school district other than Fairfax here? Come on.

For gods sake. Maybe in this age of praising every little thing our kids do, she's just looking for legit info. Knowing where your kid stacks up is sometimes useful.

I'm the quoted poster and you must be the local idiot???? What's this "grades" stuff YOU'RE prattling on about?

Second poster--I really hope you're a parent and not a teacher. A child who gets 1's is failing, not "out to lunch."

Different school systems in Virginia grade differently. Some use grades other use a number system.

I don't know about 3rd grade, but there are routinely over 200 students who make the all A's Honor roll each middle school quarter.
