teachers: how many 3rd grade students got straigh As in your class this past year?

Anonymous
^^^^^ at my DCs' (now) old MS. There are around 1300 students at the school. I would think more kids get all A's in 3rd grade.

50% of the class makes all top scores whether it is 4s or As. Speaking from recent experience.

Okay. I actually am an AAP teacher. I would say 5 kids got all 4s. so, I have to disagree with the other posters. A 4 is supposed to be ALWAYS does something independently. A 3 is good and a 2 is an area to work on, but not a tragedy.

My DD, who is in 5th grade AAP had, in the academic subjects, about 1/2 4's and 1/2 3's.

Failing and "out to lunch" are the same. If you are mentally not there or trying, you are going to fail.

As for the AAP teacher's comment -- I wonder if you have fewer 4's b/c the subjects are harder to master? My DC, in regular classes (didn't quite make the pool for AAP; was 97th percentil rather than 98th percentile in 2nd grade CogAT), got 4's in every subject except her Adv. Math class. She got a 3 in that, but she did not deserve a 4. I would think in the regular classes, more then a few kids would get 4s.

Virginia third grade is letter grades. Not sure what ya'll are going on about regarding numbers.

Not in this neck of the woods. You'uns would know this if yous lived in NOVA.

I lives in Arlington. Third graders get letter grades.

"Mentally not there"? What the h*ll does that mean? Children might fail a subject for any number of reasons, language issues among them. No need for the name-calling, especially when referring to kids.

(And before you insinuate...no, none of my kids has received a 1.)

That is way more straight As than in my son's middle. Maybe 30 out of 600.

My kid is not one of them.

There are a lot of different things a child is rated on - organizational skills being one. My dd got mostly 2's and 3's and one 4, but she got mostly 1's in organizational. The comments you are making about 1's is very rude. If my dd's class size hadn't been 29 kids with many boys with behavioral issues, perhaps her teacher could have worked with her on her organizational skills. Anyway, first grade is finally over, and I am going to work on getting dd some extra help with the area she has 1's in.

Exactly. The grades represent how consistent a student is in meeting standards independently.

No, despite most parents wishes, they do not equate to letter grades. It is about Mastery.

Mastery --what a great nonsense word.

MCPS 90%+ of the class gets a P in everything. Grading is a breeze much less work for teachers and staff. Parents don't like it but who cares.
