Down county MS/HS...what are you worried about?

I see so many posts that are very negative about the DCC and I'm trying to understand what all the fuss is about.

At the middle school level, I think people are worried about violence and worried that the curriculum is not advanced enough.

Crime, drugs, violence

There are diverse schools mid-county that have less of these issues.

Are kids being beaten up in school everyday just because they walk side by side another kids in the school? Aren't drugs available in all schools? What is being stolen?

QO have a friend in Wheaton whose daughter has attended schools in the DCC now for almost 10 years. No problems at all. She has a nice group of friends, and varied interests that she can do at school, like acting and band.

I have a friend...not QO. My iPad sucks.

Well, curriculum is the same throughout the county. I guess there is a safety perception, although it seems that is physical safety vs drugs and alcohol, which is just as prevalent everywhere.

safety concerns and concerned about more likelihood of bad influences and kids that are not as focused on school & achieving.

Kids are in an east county middle school. It's FINE. The education is great, the kids are great, my kids have lots of friends from different backgrounds.

Sure, there are more kids who have issues that people perceive as a problem. But there's plenty of drugs and alcohol on the west side, plus kids who get way too much way too soon.

I just don't think there are safety concerns if your child doesn't hang around with the kids who are discipline problems.

Come on. My kids go to a middle school with a tough reputation but I've come to realize the reputation is really just based on race. It's ridiculous. These schools are safe and my kids are getting a good solid education.

OP here...and that's exactly what I was wondering. I grew up here and went to RM. My brother went to Wheaton, DH to Northwood and Kennedy after NW closed. Both of our HS BFF were at Einstein. We have a little insight into the DCC but it was 20 years ago. It sounds like not much has changed. Those schools always had a reputation compared to Whitman and Churchill. But it never impacted any of us. None of us got in fights, we weren't in gangs. I'm sure we could have bought drugs if we looked for them but we didn't. None of us were ever mugged at school or had our cars broken into. We all graduated with the same education as the "better schools". I ended up going Ivy. DH became very successful without college. My BFF is now BigLaw partner and his BFF owns his own company. My brother moved away from the rat race and is living the good life being very happy with what he has and not wanting for any more. All in all, the 5 of us, from what is now the DCC have ended up doing very well for ourselves. I have a special place in my heart for our HS and I don't like reading about them being so inferior on DCUM.

Basic DCUM racism against those with non-asian brown skin tones.

+1 Why do people have a negative perception of DCC. Simple. The schools in the DCC have SES and racial diversity and, although a lot of people talk a good game, many people can't let go of a lot the negative stereotypes.

My DD went to a MS in the cluster for one of the W's and my DS went to a DCC MS. Many more SERIOUS issues at DD's school with regards to substance abuse and promiscuity. In fact DD's former ES best friend with two professional and educated parents was an alcholic and weed head at 13 - and most of her friends (all White females) were involved in the same things.

I do not meant to bash any cluster or schools, but kids can get into trouble anywhere ad at any school.

This is basically what it is...

I hve two kids in MS, one in the east and one in the west. Granted it's an unscientific survey but the kids in the west are doing alot of stuff much earlier and there's a lot more social pressure, unsupervised kids with disposable income, dating (or whatever you call it now), etc. I worry about that MS much more than the one that's considered less desirable.
