When is too early to follow up on a job lead?

Anonymous
An old mentor of mine told me they're hiring for a position I'm qualified for at her workplace, so I sent her my materials the Friday before last. I know I'm a sad sack, but I've been listlessly applying for other jobs and sitting by the phone waiting for a call or email ever since. Is it too early to shoot her an email and ask if they've made any interview decisions yet? Her supervisor will be making the decisions, not her. I don't want to appear desperate and pathetic, even though at this point, I'm kind of desperate.

it's been a week, you could email her and ask her the expected timing of things (ask if she knows) and let her know you are interested but don't want to bother her when she doesn't have more details.

I don't think it's too pestery to ask via email every 10 days or so.

Definitely act like it is not a possibility though and continue your search. It's so hard but it's a must!

Thank you! That helps!

Ok- sent the email, and got a response, no news yet! She'll let me know if she hears anything. Cross your fingers pps!

I mean, please cross your fingers for me. That sounded weirdly demanding. Hence why I need help writing simple emails.

OP, please relax. And please assume this job is filled, or that it sux, or that there are 1000 other jobs that you could do and be happy, and go work on getting them. Serioiusly. Because it's true.

But only job search/network a few hours a day or else you will go insane.

Remember to keep up your exercise routine when you are job hunting, or else you will just be a stress case the whole time.

OP here and while your sanity-filled post is true, it's easier said than done! I'm basically living as a SAHM and while staying with my dc is nice and it certainly is easier on me than I'm sure it is on a lot of people, (our financial strain is not that bad right now as long as we keep things tight) I just feel so sad. Also, this job search has been... awful! There are very, very few jobs available in my particular field that I'm qualified for. It's like I'm sending my resume out into the abyss and nothing ever happens! Having interaction with another human being and sending my stuff to them is such a dramatic improvement! If I can just get one or two interviews, I feel like it will give me some energy and keep me going, you know?

Ok, I feel better now that I wrote that. Vent over.
