Gen Ed to AAP mid year?

Anonymous
I just found out that our center school moved a kid from Gen. Ed into the aap center class in January. Student was not accepted, but the administration felt the student belonged in aap center full time. Fwiw, the student was going to the center class for math before then. I wonder if this is something that I can push for my dc if the appeal is not positive. Has anyone ever heard of this? Also, how do you go about having your dc pushed into the aap class for some subjects? This seems like a better option than the one hour a week of lliii.

It sounds like you have Local Level IV. I would start by asking the school principal.

No. We are a center school, not lliv. I know the difference which is why I asked this question. I thought only aap selection cmte 'approved' kids are in the center.

My understanding is that only children found center eligible by central screening are admitted to full-time Center program. Are you sure you got the facts right? Is it possible this child moved into gen ed from an out-of-county system? That would enable his parents to have him tested and moved the Center mid-year, if found eligilble.

Clarify...I think it's fine if this is the new way of doing things, as it may help my own dc, so I apologize if the 'approved' was offensive.

Yes, I have the facts right. Anyone ever heard of this?

No, child began in September in Gen. Ed. Child was new to the county, though in September.

Sure, it has happened at our school (a center) as well. It's principal placement. Just as a local level vi has gen Ed kids, so does a center. At times, they may backfill a class with gen Ed kids or principal place them.

Even if kid was from out of county, why was this student getting Local level 3 in the aap center class? Is this the policy or was this an exception? Doesn't seem fair to the other local level 3 kids at your school who weren't getting pulled in to the app center. Which school?

If new to county, even if the child started in September, the parents had the option of requesting testing and placement outside of the "normal" schedule.

How does a parent go about getting their child placed into the center? What does the principal need?

Wrong. A principal does not have the option of "pupil placing" non-eligible students into the AAP classes. That is why some centers (for example, Sunrise Valley) have "blended" AAP classes (4th and 5th grade together). They can't add students to make a full class, so they have to mix the grades together.

Still doesn't answer the question of why a Gen. Ed child is getting center services, in the beginning of the year, and the other local level three kids did not. Really, what school? Seems really unfair!

I don't want to out the school, just yet.

I have heard of some general ed students receiving advanced mathematics in the AAP Center class. But the students are receiving advanced math only, and it usually occurs when the number of students needing these services is rather small (and therefore not enough for their own class).
