My child has SPD and often overwhelmed with large and active classrooms. I have been doing a lot of research (live in DC), and it seems that even the private schools have 20-25 kids in a class. What ever happened to one teacher and about 10-15 kids? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
Langley School's Kindergarten classes have about 18 in them. |
My child's class at WES has 15 kids. |
I believe Lowell and WIS have under 20 in each K class. This year Norwood has two homerooms of 16 and one of 8 (roughly), with two full-time teachers in each of the larger homerooms. Some subjects are taught in the homeroom; some are done with half of the kindergarten (20-21 kids); reading is taught in groups of 8-9. |
Capitol Hill Day School has 16-17 kids with 2 teachers in each of PK and K (and there is a PK-K class too)
I think there was another very recent thread on this same topic. |
My son goes to McLean -- a terrific school. I think there were 12 kids in his kindergarten, with two experienced teachers. This year he has 11 kids and again, two experienced teachers. |
WIS has 15 kids per class. In PreK and K, one teacher and one assistant for those 15 kids. |
My daugher's public school in Alexandria-- Maury-- has 17 kids in her class. |
Be sure that the [private] school is willing to accomodate a SPD child. |
Burgundy Farm has up to 16 kids per K class with two full time teachers for each class. In first grade, the class size is 30 but there are three full time teachers, thus academic work is done in groups of 10. This allows for a lot of individual attention, less chaos, and good differentiated instruction. |
Norwood is 16-18? per class with 2 teachers. |
OP, it is not just your child, these classes are to big for the youngsters. They like to tell you that there are two teachers in the room with 20 kids, but that can drive any kid nuts. Too many bodies in the room. Keep looking, I found that St. Francis in Potomac can have small classes, but they change from year to year and it can be cramped because the rooms are small. Same with Harbor School, Bethesda. |
Aren't there regulations as to how many kids per adult and depending on the size of the classroom for preschool and daycare? Why aren't there any rules regarding K and higher grades? |
School aged kids don't need "care" and supervision like preschoolers. These schools could easily go to 30 with 1 teacher before breaking laws. |
