We're thinking about getting a dog, but we're worried about the hours we'd be away.
Any suggestions for a medium sized dog (less than 50lb), with even temperament that can stay indoors for the most part and get along with cats? Guess we're sorta looking for a lapdog type. Ability to scare away potential burglars a plus. |
My cockapoo can last forever without an accident. |
I think you should look into a rescue. We got our dog from FOHA. She was about year and already house trained.
The volunteers there were able to suggest dogs and we got to walk and play with them first. For the first couple weeks, plan to come home during the day to check on the dog and build up your absences in time length to prevent sep. anx |
None , maybe a cat |
Pug, get a rescue- midatlanticpugrescue.com
most will be potty trained pugs are great companions and mostly sleep all day once they are past age 2 |
This. If you get a dog and work then you need a dog walker. It is cruel to expect a dog to be alone all day w no break. |
Something fairly laid back. Not a terrier for all that they are smaller....lab, spaniel, mix of the above. It depends how much you want to do with the dog when you aren't working. |
You need a dog walker if you are gone 9-5.
|
Not necessarily a dog walker. I work 12 hr shifts: take the dogs out before I leave and then out, feed and 2 mile or so walk in the morning before I go to bed. They're fine. They also aren't puppies, which would be way different.
However: I only work 3 days a week. We are super active the other days: classes, walks, beach, running, swimming--I think they like to sleep when I'm working. |
My senior pugs sleep all day long, have to be woken up sometimes when I get home! An older dog should be okay for 8 hours. Puppies will need a mid day walk. |
We got our dog at FOHA as well! She is the best dog. OP, I suggest a mutt that's at least 2 years old. That way the puppy phase is finished, but the dog is still young and fun. Mutts tend to have fewer issues. When we adopted, we looked for the calmest dog in the shelter, but keep in mind that all dogs are a bit crazy in the shelter due to the environment. When we walked our dog at the rescue, we knew she was for us. Already good on the leash and really sweet and gentle. She's 60 lbs, btw. Small dogs are often more high maintenance and take up more "space," IMO. And you absolutely do not need a dog walker if you are gone 9-5 as someone suggested. Just train your dog. |
a stuffed one. |
I agree with the PP. 9-5 is too long for a puppy to be alone, but an older dog can handle itself better. A good mixed breed would probably suit your needs best. |
Sorry, I was agreeing with 14:42, not the poster who mentioned the stuffed dog. |
Talk to vets and vet techs, who see UTIs (not to mention, behavioral problems) all the time from dogs being left all day while people are working. You can say no dog walker is needed if that makes you feel better, but that doesn't make it true. |
