Still Holding 2 charter spots

Anonymous
I know of at least 2 or 3 of my friends who are still holding multiple charter school spots. How is this possible? When we turned our paperwork in, we had to fill in something to decline other spots? Is it because it's past the April 12th date?

DCPS only allows you to hold one spot at a time, but charters are all separate, so you can hold multiple spots and different charters, or at a charter and a dcps. I imagine this will change in years to come, but for now thats how it works.

Yes, you have to sign a paper that says you will decline other spots, but I don't know how this is enforcable or how either school would know if you are hanging on to more than one spot.

That really sucks. Unless the just got intp the 2nd school, there has been plenty of time since lottery to check out both schools and make a decision. If only PCSB would keep requiring schools to update enrollment so this could be caught. People shouldn't feel entitled to just sit on the decision for weeks, and I say that as someone who was lucky to have a choice and made sure I did my research and made a decision so as NOT to sit on someone else's spot.

I'm just envious they have two spots.

But seriously, what is going to happen in the next two weeks to change their minds? Just take a spot already and release the other one! (and please, for the love of god, give up your Haynes PS3 spot. Really you do NOT want to go there).

PCSB is in process of auditing - they require schools to report enrollment data monthly.

I want to see that happen. But who knows, if it does, then the lucky ones may well end up with no spot at all. Happened to a friend of mine who held two at DCPS when they were just getting the hang of it. I for one wouldn't chance it.

I admit to thinking about it because one sibling got into both and the other sibling is on 2nd and 4th on each wait list for a higher grade that does not move much. If I keep the sibling enrolled in both the second sibling can keep his higher place. I haven't done it, I called the school and they said if I withdraw the sibling 1 the other gets shoved down. I know its awful but now I read this thread and your actually legally allowed to do it I may reconsider until the other gets off the wait list.

Where is it written officially that people with siblings waiting can sit on 2 spots??

I don't blame families who are dealing with sibling issues for holding two spots. Frankly, it makes sense. Signed, Someone who got laughably bad lottery results for her 3 year

Honestly, I think you have to (hold 2 spots). You didn't make the rules, you're playing by them.

The paper I signed when I registered didn't say anything about a sibling exception. If these are the rules now, where are they written that this is an acceptable reason to sit on 2 seats? I understand why someone in that position would want to, but I don't understand how anyone's saying it is within the current rules. As I understand the rules and have seen them written, it is NOT within the rules and that PP could be asked to choose.

Again, at some point, this PP will have to choose. How far into the summer or next school year do you all feel it's acceptable to sit on the two spots? How close to the top of the waitlist is "close enough" to allow sitting on 2 spots?

There are just too many variables and to be fair, once you get in, you have to assess your choices and chances and make the choice that suits you best. But I look forward to when PCSB has it together enough that you simply cannot sit on both slots, and that you have to choose (within a reasonable time of offer, like maybe 2 weeks at most).

+1 on all counts.
