Resources for New Managers

Anonymous
I got a promotion and went from managing no one to managing a division of 50. I have supervisors who report to me who applied for my new position but did not get it. I actually did not apply (didn't think they'd even consider me) but was appointed by my predecessor. Now I have the job, what can I do to be successful? The organization has no on-boarding process for execs and I feel a bit like I'm blowing in the wind. I'm expected to launch 3 major IT initiatives and restructure the division. Is there coaching or other resources for me? Anyone been in this position? I've had lunch with to other division chiefs and they have nothing helpful to offer other than friendship (though I value that highly) and wishing me good luck because I'm going to need it.

How do you go from 0 to 50??!? That's one weirdly leveled org. Do you literally have 50 people reporting to you? I sure hope not...

Is this a call center ?

Yes Seriously O-50. I Have Dreams About it.

OP said he had subordinate managers. He/She probably manages 4-6 directly.

True. Then that's very different. It's basically just a first time manager.

I recommend manager-tools.com. Some good resources there. But you should absolutely approach your boss and/or your HR/development people about resources and coaching.

Were you set up for failure in this post? A couple of red flags: appointed by your predecessor without going through the process, others in your division who applied even though you didn't have to), feeling like you are twisting in the wind. I'd keep your eyes open for how you are being treated by your managers.

I wondered if I was set up to fail. So messed up. My managers were resentful in the beginning but now see how hard the job is and say they don't even want the job. Ugh. Just have to hang in for a year!
