anyone have a child with severe ADHD - what meds are you using and what doctors.
Would love to hear from any moms out there. Our child just can't sit still....major motion all the time and very impulsive. Age 7.5 |

My DC tested as having severe ADHD - dual type. It turns out he is allergic to the stimulants and developed tics during the one week he was on one and his symptoms increased so it wasn't a good fit anyway. He is on Strattera and has been for several years. It helps but it does not eliminate it. We make sure he gets good exercise everyday. We make sure he gets frequent quick breaks. We make sure he gets enough sleep. It means at 14 he has to go bed at 9:00pm. (He gets up at 6:00am to make his 6:45 bus.)
He listens to music while he does his math homework, but not for other subjects. He doesn't have a worry stone, but I know of another students that uses that or a piece of string with knots in it to play with while studying. Good luck to you and your DC. |
| Make sure he gets enough exercise. (I don't have personal experience with severe ADHD but have read that kids with ADHD need min 1-1.5 hours of exercise a day and lots of time in nature.) No red or yellow food colored foods. More protein, esp. in morning. There are calming supplements as well. Perhaps consult What's Eating your Child (book). Village Green Apothecary is a good store for supplements. Good luck OP. |
| My severe ADHD kid is on Ritalin LA 20 mg. It hasn't worked miracles, but he is able to at least get through the school day with a bit more focus. |
| for my DS with severe ADHD we did concerta, plenty of sleep (more than other kids his age), no dyes, and limited caffeine also helped. |
| Intuniv for calmness |
We go to village green also to get Valerian Supercalm. It helps him relax at night...on some nights. The red and green colored foods refers to food coloring, not the natural color of foods. As far as exercise, my own DS (I am different from OP) can't sit still either. He's bouncing off the wall at home. However, try to get him outside and he barely moves. He walks around on the lawn checking out bugs or sits on the swing. He also doesn't play sports. So I'd be interested in what others suggest to OP as my own child has similar issues.

DS (age 9) is on Vyvanse in the morning and Intuniv at dinner time.
DD (age 11) is on Adderall XR. Meds are managed by a psychiatrist (Dr. Kobylski) at JSSA. |
| Occupational therapy, therapy bands on desk chair or ball chair at school, chewy bracelet, movement breaks, weighted lap pad, natural diet, fish oil, tons of physical activity and outdoor play is what works for us. Teacher has no complaints which is a gigantic switch from earlier. |
| Metadate 30 mg. |
| My 10 year old is on 54 mg. of Concerta which has been effective and he gets plenty of exercise. |
|
my 4 yr old has been dx'd with severe adhd. he takes 2.5 mg of AdderallXR in the morning and 1.25 mg of Adderall in the afternoon and 1mg of tenex at night.
Its not 100% but its a lot better! Yeap, exercise and sleep. Sometimes 3mg of melatonin at night. I also give him omega 3 DHA and a multivitamin with iron. I want to be consistent with the magnesium but the supplement on that is hard for him to take :/ |
| I really want to understand why so many kids being diagnosed with this? How about recess... And lots more of it? |
Is village green a traditional pharmacy as well? i.e. can I get my Adderall rx there? |
