Westbrook ES or Somerset ES?

Anonymous
There was an old thread on this, but I am interested in hearing reactions from parents with children at these schools today.

Re Westbrook: Has the new Westbrook principal been named? (One concern we have is how quickly this school changes principals.) When will construction be completed? Is there still very little diversity, including among the teachers? Were rumors of no recess true? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the program and community?

Re Somerset: Is the school at or near capacity? Any leadership changes on the horizon? Is it true this school had fairly good diversity among students and faculty/staff? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this program and community?

We like Westbrook- small neighborhood school. The new principal has been named, but we don't know much about her. Current principal got a job at National Cathedral, which I think is a step-up for her. Not too much turnover, really. There is some diversity, but definitely not as much as higher up in the county. I can't imagine that Somerset woud be much different. Students all get recess. Construction will be finished over the summer, so it should be really nice.

What about class sizes at these schools?

I say this as a parent with children in Bethesda-area schools so this snark is coming from a local: this feels a lot like asking about Yale vs. Princeton.

From this I guess we are to conclude that both schools are great. If you go to a white enough school in Montgomery County, it will all be okay.

A white enough, rich enough school, yes. Both schools have FARMS percentages of < or = to 5%.

Ouch, class sizes up to 34! Not sure I'd want that even if they are rich and white.

LOL- my thoughts exactly. Except the only thing better about Yale and Princeton is FERPA-- a parent's reduced ability to helicopter.

Nobody has said that there is anything wrong with rich and white.

Bumping this up, have the class sizes at Westbrook been reduced as a result of the renovation?
