Tell me what happened after abnormal results of smear test

Anonymous
Doctor called me today, abnormal cells in my smear test, need to do another test next week which includes 2 biopsies and something else, didn't get all the info on the phone, only a 20 minutes appointment.

I am not panicking yet, would like to know what this test will be about and, if you or anybody you know have go e through this, what are the chances of positive (I guess we are talking of cervical cancer) and what happened after.

Thanks

sounds familiar of when I was dx'd with HPV. I am pretty sure I was biopsied during a follow-up.

I had a biopsy, which was uncomfortable but not that bad. We ended up watching the abnormal spots for about two years to see if they would clear up on their own, they didn't, I had a laser ablasion and am now HPV neg. Abnormal =/= necessarily mean cancer.

I had a LEEP, which was not painful at all, and they removed the lesion/abnormal cells. All paps since have come back normal and it had no impact on carrying kids. As the poster above said, it doesn't necessarily mean cancer.

I too had a leep.. Not painful. They put you out for it. I had mild cramping for one day and took a days worth of percoset. Totally fine on day 2 . Normal paps for last 15 years

I had an abnormal smear test many, many years ago. Had a biopsy. All turned out fine - no other problems since.

Me too. I had an extra Pap each year until it went away on its own.

Me too (three). While I was panicked at the time, it ended up being not a big deal at all. Almost all women have HPV at some point in time. It can flare up at any time, causing an abnormal pap. Once the abnormal pap was diagnosed, my dr did some minor procedure in office to make sure there was no cancerous growth. After that, I've had normal paps for several years.

Cells were further graded. No HPV or cancer, but still some abnormalities. I did repeat testing every 3 months for a year or two until things went back to normal. No problems since.

I had a colposcopy, results of which turned out fine.

I had an abnormal Pap smear when I was 24. They did a biopsy. It was pre-cancerous and HPV. They treated it cryogenically Which was uncomfortable, but not that bad. I did a Pap smear every six months for 5 years and then went back to 1 per year.

When I got pregnant at 32, my doctor did a more specific test and told me that I had cleared the virus from my body. Most people eventually clear the virus from their body and no longer carry it. It can take some time, though.

I am the OP.
Thank you to all of you, feeling kind of optimistic, although I want to be cautious and want to try and feel prepared in case it is not such good news. I am going for the colposcopy on Monday.

OP- mine wasn't great news. Turns out I did have early stage cancer. It was scary, but we moved quickly and I did a hysterectomy at Sibley (great doc- Dr Chernofsky) and it took a few months to recover and almost a year before I felt "normal." That said, I did not need chemo, and didnt need to have ovaries removed. You wouldn't know anything had ever been wrong with me at this point.

I guess what I'm saying is that even when the news seems bad, in my case it was still ok.

I'm this poster. My dx of HPV was about 20 years ago (I'm 43 now), and everything is such a blur since then!

I had a colposcopy, which someone else referenced, in my next exam with the doc. I don't recall any long-term trauma/drama from it, so it must not have been terrible. I guess they didn't like whatever was in the colposcopy and had cryosurgery in the doc's office shortly after. The cryo didn't "fix" everything, so I had laser ablation a few months later at an outpatient surgical center. I have normally fairly low blood pressure (to the point where nurses usually have a surprised look on their faces) and the cryo really knocked me out, if you will. The laser ablation didn't affect me anywhere near the same extent. After the laser ablation, I've been fine, so that's going on 19+ years.

I did have something "a tiny bit abnormal" in the fall at my pap. My Gyn said "On a scale of 1-10 in degree of severity, this is about a 1." She suggested it could have been because my period started the next day. Anyway, she told me to go in for a repeat Pap in a "better part" of my cycle in 6 months, and my appt. is in about 10 days. I am not worried, just dread that exam. Always dread it!!!

Good luck, OP. Keep the faith and keep not panicking. I remember freaking out when the doctor's nurse called me 20 years ago. The majority of women are affected with HPV at some point of their lives.

OP again. Sorry 06:22 you had to go through this.
It is probably not comparable but it took me a long long time to feel normal after the birth of DS1, and I really felt down because of it. Glad you recovered well and you are fine now.
