If you are a fed, what hours do you work?

Anonymous
I've been working at HHS for 10 years. Official working hours are 8:30-5:00 with a 30 min lunch but I generally get in around 9:00 (though I check email in the morning and respond to urgent matters). Sometimes I take a lunch break, sometimes no. When I do, it's generally an hour, with colleagues. I leave the office around 5:30 and then respond to emails and do some work at night (amounting to about 30-40 min). I'm a GS-14. How does this compare with you? Is your office strict about official hours?

I'm surprised your office doesn't have core hours.

I work 6:30-4 4 days a week. I am at 90%. My supervisor is.kit strict about hours as long as you dont abuse it, I.e. if you need to come in late and leave late or work through lunch, its fine as long as you get your work done. we are also on a quota system. I have heard there are other supervisors who do desk checks at 5 mins after you are supposed to be there.

A friend of mine works at the Trademark and Patent agency. He says they make their own hours but it's not uncommon for entry level 5-11 to work all the time, 6-7 days/week, 10+/day. But they eventually wise up, start cutting corners and end up working way less than 40 hours/week.

6:00-3:30 which counts as a 9 hour day (30 min unpaid lunch). Every other Friday off. Occasional work at home uncounted. GS 14.

My wife is a GS-13 and works roughly 8:45-5:30 with officially a 30 minute lunch.

My husband works 8:30 to 5:00 with 30 min unpaid lunch. He never takes work home and almost always leaves at 5 PM.

Are any of you finding that your offices are getting more strict due to the sequester?

Officially 9:30 to 6 with 30 min lunch, but we are flexible and I can pretty much work whenever I want so long as I hit 80 hours (the 30-min lunches don't count) in 2 weeks. I imagine if I didn't get my work done that would change, but I am a very high producer so I think I get more slack than some others. That is, boss has never said anything to me, but I've heard that boss has been nitpicky with others about their time sheets. Also, when I have litigation deadlines, I work considerably more. Basically 80 hours is the minimum and if you need to work more to get the work done, you do it. But I have been there long enough to be able to plan for most deadlines, so I rarely need to work extra.

Fed here

My hours are 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. 1 hour lunch break ( 1/2 hour paid, 1/2 hour paid). It took me years to negotiate this schedule.

As a supervisor, I am required to make sure that my staff reports to work on time and take their lunch breaks.
I sign in attendance electronically. No fudging. Too risky.

My office is open to the public 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. We must have coverage during those hours.

7:30 to 4:00 plus whatever extra I need to do at home in evenings and on weekends. GS -15 I never take credit hours or anything. If, once in a while I need to come in a bit late or leave a bit early it is not a big deal. I always get my work done and meet deadlines even if that means doing work at home. I have young children so the flexibility means a great deal to me. If I am ever needed in the office beyond my tour of duty, I just need a couple days notice to make sure DH can get kids after school.

As a contractor I knew GS14s in HHS that worked 40 hours tops. At one point, one of them was taking 2 hour lunches, napping in the office, etc. Our supervisor allowed it and didn't care.

Thought a lunch break is required by law.
