Stories You Don't Want during a Campaign's Final Days

If you are John McCain that is.

I've said for a long time that John McCain just can't get a break, but consider this list of stories that have all cropped up recently:

1) His "Hockey Mom" running mate spends $150,000 on clothing;

2) Said Hockey Mom's make-up artist is currently the campaign's highest paid staff member;

3) His brother Joe calls 911 to report backed up traffic. The call is recorded and released to the media

4) His campaign volunteer who was allegedly mugged by a black Obama supporter and had a "B" carved in her face admits to making up the entire story.

5) A slew of Republicans including Colin Powell, Scott McClellan, Charles Fried, and Bill Weld endorse Obama.

In an ideal world, none of these stories would matter. But, we don't live in an ideal world. We live in a world in which the Republican presidential nominee in running around talking about "Joe the Plumber" (who is actually "Sam the unlicensed plumber who makes $40,000 and would get a tax cut from Obama) and calling his opponent a "socialist". So, what can you say. Live by the trivial, die by the trivial.

Is this a matter of you reap what you sow? Karma? What goes around, comes around?

John McCain has a history of his best moments arising out of moments of defeat. The last time he was shot down began the defining experience of his life. And the shame of Keating made him a great reformer.

Perhaps he'll turn this defeat into the start of the greatest period of his life. In any case, I will consider the defeat, if it occurs, to be a great moment in MY life.

Are there any Democrats endorsing Cain-Palin? Where's Christie Todd-Whitman when we need her? We meaning "real" Republicans. (Not me, my MIL the Obamacan.)

I am curious if there are Alaskans that do not support Palin?

I was so sad last night when I watched the news and saw the McCain intern had made the entire beating up. I was sad for her. Sad that in 2008 someone would lie about being beaten by a black man. Sad that it was a hoax and this woman made it all up. Not sad that she was not beaten, sad that someone is that sick that they would make something like that up. People are really sick.

Then I saw that in two weeks Palin's make up artist made $22,000 and was indeed the highest paid staff member and I had to turn the tv off. I am voting for Obama, always was, but I cannot help but just feel bad for what a mess McCain has created.

You're sad this a hoax? I'm relieved it is. Can you imagine the racist half-witted thugs creaming their pants over this story if it were true?

Frankly, I'm sick and saddened by the ignorance and hatred I've seen from McCain supporters. I live in a pretty white, working class area (becoming more racially mixed) and the stuff I've heard and seen makes me ill. I've had people I *thought* were halfway intelligent and reasonable say they would never vote for Obama b/c he's Muslim and that he'll be assassinated in a few years and that will "take care" of the problem.

My Obama sign only lasted a couple days in my yard before it was stolen. And I've never had a political sign stolen before.

On another note, great original post Jeff!

I'm not sad it is a hoax. I am sad that this woman is that sick that she made this all up. Sorry I was not clear, I was waiting on my coffee. I am sad that someone is crazy enough to fabricate something so sick.

This intern hoax has an eery parallel to Tawana Brawley. Does anyone remember that way back in the 80's, when Rev. Al Sharpton brought her to the Democratic Convention?

I was thinking the same thing about Tawana Brawley.

I know that Brawley and this other woman are troubled people but it just makes it harder for women who really are victimized to get justice. It makes me both sad and angry.

I agree, it is just as sad as the exotic dancer in NC who lied about the Duke lacrosse players. Sets women back, in my opinion.

Yes! and my DH who is an avid lacrosse player STILL will not forgive Nancy Grace for basically hanging the team before they were cleared. He thought all along it was a hoax. Why do people do these things?

BTW, saw part of the McCain interview on Meet the Press this morning. When asked about Palin's qualifications, he recited a list of things which he rushed through and it ended up being slightly jumbled. When asked to comment on Powell's endorsement, he mentioned again the 5 former secretaries of state that have endorsed him but he could only remember 4 of them. And instead of letting it go, he interrupted Brokaw's next question to say that he remembered the 5th -- it was George Shultz.

I started feeling sorry for him -- then had to remind myself not to.

Yes. That turn-coat traitor Joe Leiberman. I cannot wait for them to kick him out of the Democratic caucus.
