I'm expecting this fall and we are moving in June. Trying to plan ahead for so many things!
When baby first comes home - is it best for them to sleep in a bassinet in the same room? When do they usually go into a crib in their own room? What kind of bassinet is best? |
With both kids, we did a bassinet next the bed for the first month or so. Borrowed on from a friend both times. |
A friend lent us a bassinet. I couldn't see into it and it was tiring to reach in for the baby and hard to put him back down asleep without waking him. And the cloth sides made me worry in case he rolled into them and couldn't breath. Now we co-sleep in our bed, but if I did it all again, I'd buy a co-sleeper that attaches to our bed but where he is sleeping next to me. Much easier for nursing and less scary for the baby than being alone. |
We're still expecting our first so I am not speaking from any kind of experience, but most of the people I've talked to have said they kept the baby in their room at first, either in their bed or in a bassinet or pack n play bassinet. |
We put our first in his crib from day 1 and plan to do the same with our second. It worked fine and he slept well. |
Did you nurse? |
We did the same with our three kids. Our BR was really too small to accomodate a bassinet (not interested in cosleeping) and our upstairs was small enough that we knew we'd hear the baby when he needed us. It worked well with our first, so we did the same with the other two when they came home. I nursed all 3 of them for over a year each. Having the baby in the nursery meant that DH could sleep while I was feeding the baby and that I could sleep when he took a shift. |
DH slept in the second bedroom with baby in crib and did one feeding so I could sleep, the other times he got our son to me for the feeding. I slept late and had baby with me in another crib till 1am and then DH had our son till 6am. It was a sacrifice to sleep apart and some juggling for the first 3 mths (when we left baby alone) but it worked for us. |
I was nursing, so bassinet was best since he could be waking up every 2 hours or so. It was much easier to pick him up and stay in bed. We borrowed it, but it was nothing fancy. Don't splurge. He went into his crib before 5 months when he started sleeping through the night. |
Bassinet is only good for a month. People use it for portability so baby can sleep next to bed. Can you just temporarily put the crib in your bedroom? |
We used a bassinet with #1 for about two months. It's convenient because it's right next to the bed, so you don't have to get up and wander the house during the (many) nighttime wakings. Just scoop them up, feed them, and tuck them right back in. Plus, for first time parents, it's reassuring because they're right there and you can hear them if they make a noise. I think when they're very little and still like to be swaddled and be in tight spaces, the bassinet is cozy and comforting for them vs. the wide open crib. But of course, they do eventually get bigger and the bassinet will be too confining if their arms get out and hit the sides, or if they reach up, so you don't use it for very long, but it's quite useful for those first two months. I am pregnant with #2 and planning to do a bassinet at first this time around as well. |
We used a pack n play with the insert for the first three months, then switched her to her crib. |
Not the PP you're quoting, but we also put our daughter in her crib from Day 1, and also nursed. I found it easier to sleep without her grunting and snorting next to me, despite having to get out of bed and go feed her. |
We had the pack & play w/ bassinet in our bedroom for the first few weeks, mostly b/c the baby's room was too cold (and would've been too hot in the summer). Once the cold spell was over, she slept in her crib in her room. And yes, I nursed.
We also had a bassinet, which we used in the family room and living room. It was really nice to have a place for her to nap while we cooked, cleaned, etc. |
We also did the pack and play with insert in our room for the first two months, then moved baby into her room with the crib. Plan to do the same for this one! |
