What gives? Is DCUM troll central or are there really that many haters/jealous types on DCUM when it comes to AAP questions? To the haters/jealous types: do your kids act the same way towards the AAP kids?

Yes and Yes. They system is set up to set the parents against each other. Works perfectly that way. Is crazy. |
If you are an AAP parent, your loaded negative question is an example of why all the hate. Sincerely, Other AAP Parent |
The hatered is because peopl do not understand th process. My kid getting admitted does not keep your kid out. Couple that in with "cheaters" who try to inflate the gbrs or get the exact form of the cogat to prep against, then you have animosity |
I have a kid who went through the GT program. I have never experienced any "obvious hate". Some people or friends were a little uncomfortable at discussing it at first, but nothing lasted. Business was as usual in about a few weeks. |
I think it just gets tiring to read AAP thread after AAP thread as if there's nothing else that matters within FCPS. |
If AAP doesn't matter to you, don't read the threads. If there's something else within FCPS that matters to you, start a thread on that topic. If it matters to you, chances are it matters to someone else. |
Yes and yes too. We are in APS. The craziness in the AAP posts and the complete psychoness (I grew up in Ffx Co and it was NOT like this when I was a GT kid) makes me really happy we landed in APS. We chose Arlington for the location/walkability--but I have been thrilled with our schools and so glad the gifted/AP is much more low-key and in-school and by subject. I would not have been able to tolerate the degree of tiger-momness. We have a few, don't get me wrong. The process just doesn't give them much ground. |
could you give an example of this? I haven't seen it. Other than the compalints that too many of the threads on this subforum are AAP, AAP, AAP - like that's all that merits discussion amongst VA public schools parents. |
In my view, the AAP hate is caused by a simple fact:
Historically, the program takes about 15-20% of the student population. Probably only 1 kid per school is truly noticeably more "gifted" than everyone else, and probably the next 50% of the population is smart enough to do the AAP work. But the kids really aren't that distinguishable... so it leads to a bit of a crap shoot about who gets in and who doesn't. And that breeds animosity. |
Maybe we should have a dedicated AAP forum rather than flooding the "VA Public Schools" forum. |

It's because the obsession with AAP is just nauseating. My kid was regular/non-GT (as it was called then), took IB in HS got into William & Mary. DC's long time friend was GT/TJHSST and is also going to W & M. Not sure what all the craziness is going to do in the long run when the kids end up in the same place anyway. |
