BOE - who are people voting for?

Lynne Harris teared up at the end and choked on her words. Guess she's taking the loss hard.

Just wait till you see the new ones.

It was a bad choice vs. bad choice.

The losers are the students.

If you want better candidates, make the positions a reasonably attractive occupation by affording compensation similar to that which would be garnered from alternate job opportunities for those with the level of education and experience that would meet your expectations for a well qualified candidate.

+1

The BOE sucks and it's a structural issue stemming from the expectation people (predominantly women) should work for peanuts.

Then explain the well paid County Council.

Huh? The county council isn't well paid. Yes, they get more than school board members, but far less than other jobs with a comparable level of responsibility.

But higher-paid school board positions would probably just attract more career politicians. They'd be better off restructuring the school board to require substantially less time. Then working parents could serve on the Board.

What was she expecting when she treated people so badly and was so phony that people could see through her?

Boards are generally volunteer jobs with stipends.

Retirement... they aren't retiring, they got voted out because they were incompetent.

You know nothing about her. Be silent.

She did a terrible job, I watch every BOE meeting and pay attention. The current BOE has run MCPS into the ground and all need to be replaced.

That's sad. I feel bad for her but it's time for some fresh perspectives.

Based on my kid's experience, MCPS seems better today than when I was a kid at a W twenty years ago. People like to promote this myth of an MCPS that never was.

Based on my experience as a kid and MCPS, it is far far worse. The curriculum is terrible, behavior is bad, bathrooms are locks, kids are concerned about safety and there are few advanced classes except at select schools which most of us don't have access to.

How is the stipend bad? It what $25K or so a year, I forget the exact amount. Teachers make $65 starting so that's equal to a teacher's salary given its only part-time. And, most of the BOE members have full-time jobs (not sure how they manage it with all the days off but they do).

Can't wait to hear all your deep insights two weeks into the new board members' tenures.

+1 Too many scandals in the past 10 years I've been here, especially in the last 5 years. It's time to move on. We need more accountability, all around.
