| The last few days (new home for us), the bees have been really bad outside, especially bumble bees. What can I do to keep them away from the front porch and back patio? |
| Mine too! My kids are terrified. |
| They might be attacted to a flowering plant. What is blooming? |
|
OP again - my pest guy said to do those bee catcher things, but he said its a double edged sword because it can attract even more bees, altough mostly going away to the catcher.
I've also been researching that feverfew plants repel bees, but I saw one posting where someone reported they attracted bees. Anyone have any luck with these? |
| OP here - nothing is blooming except our dogwoods in the front/side. |
|
Honestly, just leave them. Bumble Bees are not aggressive and do not build the wasp type nests you see. They are getting very active to the warm weather. Don't swat at them aggressively, just step away. They aren't that interested in humans.
|
| They are probably carpenter bees trying to get in your house. If you see them disappearing into little holes in your house, time for the exterminator and then the painter. BTDT. |
|
We have masonry bees and carpenter bees. They are not generally aggressive and we have learned to live with them rather than kill them. They can be great pollinators and with the decline in honeybee populations, we need more pollinators!
We did get rid of a wasp nest last year as soon as we saw it under construction. They are more aggressive. So I think it depends on (1) the type of bees you have - or if they are wasps, hornets, etc., - or if you have found a large nest. Also (2) whether anyone in your family is very allergic to stings. If so, then you may have to take more aggressive action. My sister is very allergic and so my parents were pretty vigilant about getting rid of bees, etc. |
| Poor bumble bees. Man the generation coming up is wussy about everything...a few bugs in the house, bees, throwing out food when it's past the Best By date. You'd think we were talking about rattlesnakes or scorpions. Sheesh. |
|
Use it as a way to teach your kids about how to handle themselves around other living creatures. One day they will leave the cocoon and they need to know that not everything is stranger danger, creature danger, flesh
-eating bacteria and germs. |
| Some of the bees are hornets, so I definitely want to take action. The rest are definitely bumble bees thank goodness. My last place had carpenter bees, which were much larger and damage the place (the condo assoc was too ignorant to exterminate them). |
| Yes, carpenter bees are a different story. |
|
Call a beekeeper.
They may come remove them for you! |
| Our bees are really sane. They give us very astute advice over dinner. |
| They are even worse! We have three kinds - the regular looking, bumble bees, and the scary kind that are hornets I think. Ugh! Please somebody recommend something - a plant to repel them? |
