Teacher here. I have been saying this since the day before winter break when it was communicated very clearly to us this is what is happening and frankly it is ALARMING how many parents whose very vocal haranguing to open schools and who are directly responsible for this choice are now in disbelief it will actually happen. People, we keep telling you, in each of these districts, they have decided to THROW AWAY community spread metrics and go in pretending it doesn’t spread in schools. And if you were one of those people yelling at them to open schools open schools open schools, this is your doing and the fact you want to believe now it won’t happen when a lot of teachers and kids are about to have to face the consequences of YOUR words and actions is appalling to me .

It would not work with the bus schedules.

it would if they 1. gave up the 11 students on a bus nonsense- APS is the ONLY school district doing this.
2. didn't offer transportation to the option schools.

Wrong. FCPS and LCPS are doing that too.

I get being pissed but you know these are not necessarily the same parents, right? There is an entire block of reasonable parents out there, that neither think school should open during the height of the pandemic, nor think that schools should stay closed until there is zero covid-19 risk.

I'm curious if there will be any change in message given recent news on vaccine priority, and the more spreadable UK variant. I don't think either of those were in play before break (not that I think we should be going back right now even if those things weren't in play now).

Sure. But I’m talking about what I have seen on THIS board. A lot of “schools are safe, open them, teachers can’t teach online, our area is a laughingstock, my sisters kids in Ohio are in person and fine” only for posters in this board to now scoff and say “they won’t open at the height of a pandemic.” They can and will.

I get it but again, they are likely different parents saying these things. It seems very unlikely that parents who are in the open now camp (for whatever reason) are posting on this board that we shouldn't be open now. So you're coming across as incredibly angry to a group of parents who did nothing to deserve it.

Parents are going to pull their kids. Don’t worry.

That doesn’t mean teachers don’t still have to go in. We do.

If you don't want to go in, quit your job.

I’m getting through to the end of the year so I don’t leave my students in a lurch but messages like this are why I’m not returning next year. I’m well aware now how worthless and disposable we are seen as being. I don’t believe in what I do anymore now that society’s true opinion of teachers has been revealed. What we do does not matter to most people. I get it now so I can leave the job and not miss it. And I am far from the only one who will leave.

Good riddance. If you cared about society’s opinion they you would show up to work. What you care about is getting a paycheck so you won’t leave.

Most of us parents don’t feel that way at all. Stop reading these message boards. I see the effort my DCs teacher puts in every single day. She is amazing and is doing the very best she can given the circumstances.

I work every day. Same as I always did. I can get a paycheck anywhere.
