No that is incorrect, even if you are tongue-in-cheek.

Atheists are people who do not have a belief in a god or gods.

What’s the difference? Is there something you believe in that is more important than yourself?

I literally don't understand the question. There are lots of things that are "more important than myself," but that fact/belief doesn't particularly alter my behavior in any way. What do you or would you do differently because you believe in God?

So, what are these “lots of things?”

I decline to answer because I don't understand the purpose/value of the question. But I accept that you believe that God is more important to yourself and that that makes you better than me in certain ways.

I don’t think I am better than you. I think I am braver than you for admitting what I believe in.
What are you scared of? It’s an anonymous forum.
And of course it’s valuable and relevant to the discussion. The question is “what do atheists believe in?” You are an atheist, so speak it. What do you believe in?

Different atheist here. Atheists are all different; the one common thing is a lack of belief in gods. You can't classify atheists by belief; it's a classification based on the negative - what we DON'T believe in. Atheists may believe in many different things without believing in gods/higher beings: belief in the inherent equality of all humans, that everyone deserves respect and dignity; that there is an essential, shared human experience and we are all part of that greater, interdependent whole; belief in the golden rule and basic moral principles; belief that life is beautiful and worthwhile and we're here to experience its complexity and try to leave things better than we found them for those who'll come after; that doing no harm is a guiding principle. It's absurd to think that atheist= belief that no one is more important than me. I am just a small part of this world that is shared by many others. I don't presume to be more important than others, or than the public good, or the health of the planet, etc. I consider myself "more important" than some things and "less important" than others. It all depends ...

BTW I am very tolerant of religion because I realize that people need it.

Why do you think some people need it and some don’t?

Because some can't cope.

Lots of folks can’t cope. They turn to drugs, alcohol, food, spending money, sex, work, etc.

So are Christians weak becomes they can’t cope? That’s a pretty arrogant statement.

Not all people who can't cope turn to the weak, negative ways of coping described above. Some simply have a faith that a supernatural being exists that cares for them and will allow them to continue living forever after their human life is over. Others don't need, or are not attracted to the idea of such a being.

I didn’t say anything about behavior. I am saying that atheists don’t believe in the existence of anything larger or more important than themselves. Pp said I was wrong, but no one gave an example of something they DO believe in.

DO you think intangible ideals can't be larger or more important than a given individual, or just that atheists can't believe in them?

I think you can't bring yourself to discuss this in good faith.

Prove me wrong. Convince me you aren't trying to have an inauthentic conversation.

If this is OP, this is not somebody who is interested in an authentic discussion with atheists.

I think OP is actually pretty troubled and may have realized that deep down she doesn't believe either, and that really distresses her.

As an atheist in this specific conversation, I feel bad for her pain and hope she finds some peace and a more healthy perspective, however that path looks for her.

(But I necessarily cannot speak for any other atheists! )

Op posted asking what Atheists believe because she is unsure of what atheists actually believe.

Which we all know now is: nothing.

I think that there are a few religious posters for whom I wish peace, because it's clear they are deeply troubled.
