Although that won't be the case if they go April 15 and there's no more missed days. April 15 is a new add on, which should take the calendar back to June 25..... |
| Y'all underestimate the power of the teacher's union. If their union is telling folks the last day will be June 18, then I believe it. Why would they put that out there to over 10,000 teachers if they didn't already know this to be true? |
For heavens sake. The News We are making the following calendar adjustments now: April 15, previously scheduled as a non-instructional day for teacher grading and planning at the end of the marking period, will now be an early-release day for students. Impact on the Last Day of School As you know, this winter’s severe weather forced us to close schools several times. Under current Maryland regulations, those missed days have to be made up either through designated make-up days in the calendar and, if necessary, by extending the school year. That is why we recently announced that our calendar had been adjusted to add days to the end of our school year, setting the last day of school to June 26. June 26 includes having the Apr 15 make up day |

Wouldn’t MCPS be able to end 6/18 if they just made 1 of the Eid holidays a half day?
But they’re not willing to do that so teachers have to start their summer 8 days later?? |
To try to force the outcome that they want. |
Are teachers going to pay back the district for the contract days not worked? |
Unlikely, but if so, you should be prioritizing education more. |
Just reduce one of the bi-weekly payments to get that money back. |
There is no education occurring on June 22-26. Just potential quota days to say that school was open 180 days. |
| Sounds like a strike to me |
| Why can't they use 6/19? They have school on other federal holidays such as Veterans Day. |
Agree. Consequences of having to hold school are fine by me. And they should be doing better planning so they are not in this position again. But did they? Nope, next year's calendar has the same problem. |
That's why they need to plan better. And they won't do that if they aren't forced to actually offer school. Same goes for the union. |
Then don't send your kid. They are not going to care. But that's not a reason to prevent MCPS from offering the mandated 180 days of school. |
Exactly this. |
