I am not the PP but they are making sense. Maybe you think they're wrong, but to say it doesn't make sense? It's absolutely true. For example, the CDC still strongly encourages 2 year olds to wear masks in all indoor spaces they share without household members if they are high risk or community levels are high, without acknowledging that:

A. Many 2 year olds are not developmentally able to wear a mask properly, and it's also difficult to find masks that properly fit them (which means that the benefit of masking in this population is minimal); and
B. Numerous health authorities across the world including the World Health Organization and the Tokyo Medical Association have expressed concerns about the developmental impacts of masks on young children (https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2022/05/16/national/masks-kids/)

The CDC dug in on young children wearing masks at the beginning of the pandemic, and now they will never reverse their position. Thankfully most now ignore them, which is good in this particular case but not great for the future of public health in general.

Where are all the people clamoring for two year olds in masks?

Are you not aware that the mask mandate in DC included 2 yr olds?

Currently?

I wasn’t that poster, but it’s ridiculous that you do not know that the CDC recommends masking 2 yr olds (which is also ridiculous).

You are offended by that, seriously? You act like they are knocking on your door at 2 AM to round up your children if they aren’t masked. It says children as young as two CAN mask.

If we were speaking in person you could not so easily pretend masking 2 year olds is not real, current public health guidance

Yes, and then above it it says depending on community levels high risk people and/or everyone SHOULD mask. That clearly includes 2 year olds.

They've obviously given up on mask mandates because nobody listens to them anymore. Big surprise.

Has it ever occured to you that some parents of two-year-olds may want to know if it’s safe to mask them? You might not choose it for your two year old but someone else might. And whoever wrote that crazy line above really needs anger management.

But the CDC does NOT say it's safe to mask a 2 year old should a parent want. They say "Children ages 2 years and older can wear masks or respirators to protect themselves and others from COVID-19." Combined with the text above they absolutely support state or local mandates that include 2 year olds. They never acknowledge that many if not most 2 year olds cannot properly wear a mask. They never acknowledge that concerns about developmental impacts are legitimate. It's horrible guidance.

I'm confused, when people say they want people to mask, are they NOT talking about following the CDC guidance? Because the CDC guidance definitely says 2 and older.

DP - I agree. My child went to daycare from July 2020 on wearing various kinds of face coverings. He was 3 when it first started. They would show up in their little masks of varying protectiveness and then take them off to all eat snack together. Then they would put them back on to play until they took them off again to all eat lunch together. After lunch they would settle in for a nice 2 hours of maskless nap in the same room, only to put them on again to play outside afterwards. It was so stupid, not even counting the fact that their noses were all sticking out when they were "wearing" them. Why did we require that?!
Anonymous
And the long term problem with things like recommending masks for everyone 2 and up, or having school closures and then mask mandates in place for a year+ is that the gap between the guidance and what people can and/or are realistically willing to do in practice becomes increasingly larger to the point that nobody listens to it anymore.

Get your shots (flu, covid boosters, etc) if you’re eligible and able. Period. Beyond that, I can’t live in a bubble for the rest of my life. For those who are truly immunocompromised, they were taking precautions long before covid became a thing. I think it’s completely unrealistic to continue telling people who are fully vaxxed and also likely have natural immunity to wear an N-95 indefinitely.

Anyone with young children who is being honest with themselves can recognize that mask mandates for young children were completely disconnected from reality. Yet they went on for over a year. As the PP said, sure it made sense for a few months. But to just insist on continuing it and gaslighting any parents that questioned it (hello AAP) when people on the ground knew how useless it was, that is a great example of how public health authorities lost a lot of people's trust.

I met with him today, and I was struggling not to laugh during our meeting because he looks like a duck when he's talking with his N95 on. I had to look down for much of the meeting so I'd stop picturing a duck.

Those duck masks are hilarious. I can't take anyone seriously who is wearing one of those. Not that I really take anyone seriously who is still wearing a mask, but at this point, it's a great way to let me know who to avoid!

The health authorities should have focused on the most effective methods that people would have followed. Focus on protecting the most vulnerable populations, and don't waste time on trying to force 3 year-olds to wear masks, because that has negligible benefits.
