Funeral in FL?

I'm very sorry for your loss. COVID has made grieving so much harder for everyone. I hope you, your dad, and your brother all have good support from friends and loved ones.

Thanks. The memorial was Friday, the cemetery thing was Sunday and after Monday haven't really heard from anyone except my dad and brother. My dad has some really kind friends inviting him to Rosh Hashanah and lunch and stuff. He's really the one most affected by this - his entire lifestyle changes now. I haven't lived with my mother in over 20 years, you know? I'm mostly sad for my father. He's never lived as an adult without my mom, except when he was drafted in the army.

This. And while you’re in FL send baked goods to hospital workers. It’s a thing. And whatever you do, don’t talk about the virus. The devil has inhabited peoples minds to believe the virus is real and our government is trying poison us with a vaccine. The vaccine has a chip in it to monitor you. This is also a thing in FL.

FL is 67% at least 1 dose and 56% fully vaxxed.
My county in south florida is 67% fully vaccinated.

MD is 62% fully vax, VA is 58%, DC is 59%.
Enough with the broad brush sweeping generalizations of Fl.

OMG thank you. DC is barely more vaxxed than FL. Reality: unless you're in a rural area of FL (you won't be) you're probably not going to run across the crazy anti-vaxxers that the media is constantly yelling about.

So why is Orlando conserving water to free up O2 for hospitals?

Are you close to the other relatives who are attending? Funerals are for the living not the dead.

How many are anti-vaccine? Are you willing to put up with unvaccinated crazy jerks when you are mourning someone who just died? It can be really hard to ignore their stupid, selfishness but when you are grieving someone who just died from that very disease it can be pretty bad.

Really so you would get covid and what stay in Florida til you were better?

OMG, why are you asking on social media to clear your conscience?

Please go get sick take a space in a hospital and live your life as the selfish human you seem to be.

They want to conserve O2 but also simultaneously tell everyone it's fine and there is no need to worry about supply.

No OP, I would not go. My relatives would laugh at me because I was being cautious, so no need to pay for a flight to go through that.

If it was my mom or dad, I might decide to go, but no one else--especially in Florida, at this point.

Because they're having a surge in cases. But the notion that it's because the state is overwhelmingly less vaccinated than DC or other places not having a surge is not correct. They're not that far behind. Their surge might be explained by different behavior in that state vs. others, or seasonality, or the huge number of tourists passing through, or something else. But three percentage points behind DC in vaccinations isn't "OMG you're going to be utterly surrounded by people who think the vaccine is a microchip!!" territory, unless you want to say the same about us.

I wonder if anyone has done an age adjusted vaccination rate calculation. We know that nationally, people who are 65+ have a higher probability of being vaccinated. Florida did a good job getting their seniors vaccinated early on (my mom was part of that cohort). If we looked at vax data per state adjusting for age, I wonder if we would see a low vaccination rate in Florida. The people most likely to be out and about might have significantly lower probabilities of vaccination compared to similar demographics in the DMV.

I am sorry for your loss.

You definitely did the right thing.

It is wonderful that your father made the decision for you.

My brother died of COVID very early on and when his wife decided not to have a service IRL, the family breathed a sigh of relief (we are all over 60 and would have had to travel by air--prevaccine).

It makes NO sense for others to risk their lives, to honor someone is has passed on.

I hope that your father is able to adjust, in time of course.

Well... Except that your stats are also a broad brush sweeping generalization.

The average you cite for the state of Florida masks the fact that counties like Miami Dade, with a fully vaccinated rate among adults 18+ of 68%, bring up the average, while counties like Holmes County stand at 29%. At least 18 counties in Florida have fully vaccinated rates for adults 18+ in the 30s. Similarly, MD and VA counties in the DC metro area boast vaccination rates in the 70s and 80s for adults 18+, while the some very rural counties in VA drop well below these rates. But make no mistake: there are many counties in FL with fully vaccinated rates for adults 18+ in the 30s, whereas there are no counties in MD with fully vaccinated rates below the 49% and only two in VA that dip just below 40 percent.

So sad. Sending kind thoughts. Loss of a wife can be really hard for some men

The jump in vaccination is a recent thing, after their surge started people scrambled to get vaccinated. That’s how they caught up
