Summer running sucks so hard

I ran 5, at a good pace. 😄

Yes, I am that crazy friend that each of you has who actually LOVES running in this weather.

But I’ll be jealous of you all in a couple of months when it’s “too cold” for me to run (basically under 50 degrees) and I rely on yucky indoor cardio machines.

You can run in the cold. Its not that bad once you get used to it. You just need the right gear and you don't even feel it.

I can run in the cold, you’re right, but I HATE it. My nose starts to run as soon as the temp is in the 40s, so then I am either blowing snot rockets or getting snail tails on my sleeves — either is gross. And I have to layer up ridiculously since I’ve got low body temp/low BP to begin with.

I completely admit that as much as people whine about running in the heat and humidity, I’m twice as whiny/wussy about the “cold.” It’s just how I am. I’ll enjoy these hot and humid months, then go into my cardio-machine hibernation! It’ll mean one less runner huffing on your trails from October onwards. 😀

DP. I'm amazed at how different people are! In the summer, I feel like the air is so thick and it makes it harder for me to breathe and get air in running. In winter, I feel like I get more oxygen in. It's more comfortable physically, but I breathe better. My nose does drip sometimes but nothing that a sleeve won't fix

Any of you get out there this morning? It literally felt like I was running through a sauna. It was soooo gross out! Cut my run short at 2.5 miles and went home and biked the rest of my workout!

Not today, but did an outdoor hill workout yesterday.

My running clothes needed a hazardous waste warning.

When the humidity is this bad, I find evening runs (9-10 PM) are MUCH more tolerable.

I like summer running, but I go at 6:30 am. Nothing like a disgusting August morning sweat—I feel so much better after a sweat like that (and a shower).

I went out this morning. It was pretty soupy. I go out 4-5 times a week no matter what unless it's outright dangerous due to high winds, lightning, or ice. I really don't mind the heat or the cold that much. I just wear the right clothes and accept that my jog that isn't very fast anyway may turn into a walk at a certain point.

I am a total baby about running in the cold. I don't run if it is less than 45 degrees outside. On the flip side, I just did a 3 kile interval run at noon in Florida, 92 degrees and a heat index of 107. I can't run long in that heat, but I do enjoy short, fast runs in that kind of weather.

Oak Mites have ended summer outdoor exercise

This is so confusing to me - where are you people getting bit by oak mites?

There were plenty of cicadas on tree-lined paths/trails where I live and run, and I've never seen one or gotten bit by a single one of these alleged mites.

But 10 minutes of yard work resulted in like 15 mosquito bites...

I used to be like that but now 45 degrees I'm running in shorts. With gyms closed, I ran outdoors all winter. In snow, subfreezing and all. Really not that bad with the right gear. My hands are really the only thing that get cold and I bought some heat packs for my gloves. And wearing a gaiter mask ended up being a game changer because it keeps your face warm.

A friend recently asked me whether she should get a treadmill to keep running during the winter. I was like if you can run through summer, winter is no problem…

I run year round and agree it’s all about tools and timing. Summer runs early in the morning, winter runs as late as I can make them in the mornings. The right clothes, including fleece headband and good gloves for winter and shorts and good socks for summer. Plus Hex laundry detergent - and absolute must for summer sweaty clothes. So gross.

YUCK, me too. Between the bugs and the humidity, I am done with summer. Hoping for a couple more beach days, then we can move right along.

Do any of you ever feel swollen on a hot, humid day? I have pretty new running shoes, and they were very comfortable the first few times I wore them, then yesterday, seemed "off." A little tight and uncomfortable.

Go early like 6:30am. It’s still humid as hell but starting even an hour earlier make a big difference.

Went running at high noon today. Some cover on the trail, but mostly open and sunny. Felt great! (I’m one of the crazy hot-weather-loving PPs.)

I think one of the things that helps is my attitude that just getting out in the heat and humidity is itself a triumph. No need to get a PR. I’m very forgiving of my pace, and I listen to my body.

Good luck, summer runners!
